The newest one though, the blond wannabe heartthrob, he moved in close as he made his way to the exam room. He paused, his grin turning almost wicked.

“Dude, what are you doing?” His friend stood, running his hands through his hair in apparent frustration. “She’s pregnant.”Callahanglanced down at her stomach, wondering if she’d popped without realizing. She frowned; no, it looked like she ate the world’s largest burrito but she wouldn’t think anyone would assume she was pregnant. “And can’t you smell the shifter on her? She’s mated.”

Smell the shifter?Shelifted her arm to her nose, wondering what he was talking about. She smelled like her vanilla lotion and Jasper’s spicy cologne. She smelled amazing. Wait. “Did you saymated?” Had she stepped into an alternate universe? Maybe her blood sugar was low and she was hallucinating.

The blond one stepped impossibly closer, leaning into her neck and dragging his nose up to her ear. He was sniffing her.

Her heart started to race at the wrongness of everything that had happened or was said in the last two minutes.

Something wasn’t right and nothing made any sense.

She wanted this guy away from her. Far, far away.

She felt the urge to scream, thecall for helpstartedto rise in her throat, and then, poof,he was gone.

Chapter Thirty-Four

Jasper

Jasper had some punk-ass kid pinned to the wall, growling in his face, teeth bared. He was murderous, he wanted to rip the young shifter limb from limb, ensure he would never be able to touch anyone’s mate again. He could hear Callie behind him, begging him to stop, to let the boy go. She sounded scared, confused even. He couldn’t though, he couldn’t take a chance that this asshole would go after his mate. He’d do anything to protect her, to protect their baby. He’d kill before he let anyone hurt them.

Maddi’s voice joined the frightened chorus, asking what was going on. He could hear her calling Linc on her cell, shouting for help. The kid’s buddy was pleading with him, trying to explain his friend wasn’t a bad guy, that he’d tried to stop him.

Jasper tightened his grip, watching as the shifter began to turn an unnatural shade of purple.

Before he could snap his neck, he was draggedawayby Linc and Jace. It took both of them to pull him off the kid and out into the parking lot. He could feel himself fight them, but he couldn’t seem to do anything to curb his anger.

He wasn’t in control right now; his wolf was.

And if they’d learned anything about his shifter over the last couple of years, it was that he did what he wanted.

He punched Jace once, and then he was down on the ground, his hands pinned behind his back and his cheek against the hot pavement. His twin no longer acting like a concerned brother and instead taking onhispack beta persona.

“She’s okay, she’s safe. Callahanand the baby are safe. Maddi needs to defuse that situation and make sure that guy is okay,” Lincgrowled, while Jasper didn’t givea shit if that little prick was okay or not. “Dammit, Jasper, I don’t want my mate inthereby herself, do you understand?Fuck, stop fighting me.”

“Riley, go in there with Maddi and help her wrap things up,”Jace was barking orders with his knee in Jasper’s back. “And get Callahan out here so he’ll stop fighting us.”

The moment Callie stepped into view Jasper stilled. He needed to make sure she was unharmed, that she was safe. He could tell she was scaredandconfused.

He wasn’t sure she’d come to him, or let him near her. He’d showed her a part of himself she didn’t know existed. Jace and Linc stepped away from him, making sure not to move any closer to Callie. To his mate. They were smart, not wanting to set him off all over again.

He stood, adjustedhis clothes, andwipedhis split lip. Hewasn’t sure which one of them had hit him, but he’d put money on it being his twin.

“Callahan, you have to go to him. He won’t hurt you.I swear it.” Jace had his hands on his hips, his gaze trained on her. “He’s not going to calm down until he has you in his arms, and if that kid walks out here with him still pissed, it’s going to get badfast.”

She swallowed, her hands twisting in front of her. She was hesitant, but eventually she crossed the parking lot and stepped intoJasper’sembrace. He sagged instantly, the tension and anger draining out of him at her soft touch and sweet scent.

He hugged her tight, pulling her as close as he could. He let his hands roam her body, checking her for injury and replacing that young shifter’s scent with his own. He nuzzled her neck, placing a soft kiss under her ear when what he really wanted to do was lick her from head to toe.

Linc let out a long, exhausted sigh. “When the fuck did this happen?” He knew Jasper’s reaction to Callie was undeniable, and entirely recognizable. They were mated.

“Last night.” Riley was back, which meant Maddi must be done. The teens had probably been led through the back exit so they didn’t have to come near him.

“She know?” Linc, everyone, was talking like he and Callie weren’t standing right next to them, listening. Jasper hugged her closer, tucking her in under his chin.

Jace glared at him. “Apparently not.”

Jasper chose to ignore his brother, his pack beta. He’d had every intention of talking to Callie that morning, but she’d left as soon as the sun came up. He figured she needed a minute, needed some space. Which was why he’d come into town, had asked to drive her home.
