“It works with duct tape, too.”

“What does?” She arched her back and moaned as my tickling turned to hot open mouth kisses all over her stomach.

“You can get out of the tape the same way, just slam your wrists down.”

“Good to know.” She panted. She sat up on her elbows and bit her lip. “I can think of a few other ways we can use those zip ties.”

I growled into her stomach, “You naughty girl.” And then I stood up and swiftly threw her over my shoulders and headed up towards the stairs. “I’m taking you to bed.”

“You forgot the zip ties.”I grumbled as Mason carried me towards the stairs. “It would be kind of hot.” I offered in a sing-song voice. I felt slightly nervous at the offer, but I knew I was safe with Mason.

“If you want me to tie you up and fuck you senseless, I have much softer things upstairs I can use.” He chuckled and rubbed my ass and then spanked me as he started up the stairs.

My core tightened with longing at the suggestion. As he carried me over his shoulder, I bobbed up the steps and my head swung with each step. Halfway up the stairs, I started to get an odd feeling, and I gripped Mason’s waist. I felt something bulky under his shirt, and I lifted it up, and it all came flooding back to me. The sensation of being carried on the stairs in my own home, the height where my hands fell at his waist.

I stared at the bandage in horror as I suddenly pieced it together.

Mason was the one who’d attacked me that night my computer had corrupted. Mason was the one who broke into my house, who’dzip tiedme. And it was Mason who I’d stabbed trying to get away.

His foot hit the top of the stairs, and I couldn’t breathe.

“Put me down.” I whispered.

“Hmmm.” Mason rubbed my ass again.

“Put me down.” I screamed and railed against him.

He quickly pulled me down over his shoulder. “Emma, what’s the matter?” Concern sprinkled his face, and horror washed over mine.

My heart thundered in my ears. I backed up as I eyed Mason, who stood in front of the stairs blocking my only exit out. I pressed myself against the wall in the hallway, willing to create more distance between the two of us.

“It was you.” I finally managed to say it out loud. “It wasyou.”

His stance changed in such a subtle way, I knew. I was right.

“Emma.” He said it cautiously as he put his hands up. “Emma, I would never intentionally hurt you.”

I inched down the wall. “Except you did. Youdid.”

I felt like I was suffocating. I felt like my head was right back in that bucket of water again. All my senses were on high alert. I could feel the subtle texture of the drywall under my fingers as I inched down the hallway.

Mason stepped forward and tried to close the gap.

“Don’t come any closer, Mason. Don’t.”

I must have sounded convincing because he put his hands out, palms up, but I knew better than to let him get close. I lunged for the bedroom door and slammed it shut, locking it. It was just one of those flimsy little bedroom locks that could be opened with a bobby pin. I frantically looked around, knowing Mason would be through that door in no time flat. My eyes darted around the room, trying to make sense of it, feeling like a trapped animal looking for a way out. I couldn’t tell up from down.

I had trusted him. I had let him comfort me when I was afraid. Now I realized he’d be the perpetrator. He’d been the cause of the fear, the cause of the pain. What once felt safe suddenly felt threatening. Life threatening. And I didn’t know what to do with it. My heart was breaking into a thousand pieces and simultaneously threatening to implode in on itself as my chest tightened with fear.

“I’m coming in.” Mason called out, and the door split in two as he burst through it.

I screamed and lunged for Mason’s nightstand, where I knew he kept his firearm. I ripped the drawer open and pulled the gun out and aimed it at him.

“Emma, put the gun down.”
