My whole body quivered, and suddenly Mason didn’t seem like a warm cocoon, no my eyes saw him for what he truly was.

A towering, muscled, trained killer.

A threat.

No longer my safe haven.

Adrenaline coursed through my veins, and terror coursed through my heart. At the idea that I could shoot him, that maybe Ishouldshoot him.

“Emma.” He inched toward me with his hands up. “Emma, put–”

I screamed, “Stop. Saying. My name. Stop. Stop. Stop.” I tightened my grip on the gun.

“Let me explain.” His tone changed.

“Show me your side.” I demanded.

“Let’s just talk, ok?” I could hear the false calmness with which he spoke, I knew it was part of his training, to subdue me, to earn my trust back, just long enough so he could get the gun from me. It wasn’t real.

“Show me your side.” I snapped.

He reluctantly lifted his shirt.

“Where did you get that?”

“Iran.”

“Liar!” I screamed.

“I think you know where I got it.”

“All this time… you moved me into your house… into your bed!” I kept the gun aimed at him. The fight or flight was taking over, and mostly the fight was starting to kick in. “All this time.”

“Just let me explain.”

“You… you hit me. You drugged me, you made me think I was going to die.” I started to thread all the horrible things together that had happened to me over the last few months. “You dragged me to Iran. You dragged me to that gala where I almost got killed again. You are a killer, Mason. Are youtryingto kill me?”

“Just think it through. Wouldn’t I have already killed you if I wanted you dead? Hmmm?” He tried to take a step forward, his hands were still up.

“Back the fuck up.” I screamed.

He stayed in place, not moving forward or backward, and he spoke calmly, too calmly. I didn’t blink; I watched him, making sure he didn’t try anything. “Viktor was going to send a team in after you fucked up with the security breach in June.”

“Bullshit.”

“He was going to send a team in to scare you. Emma… they don’t fuck around, they break bones, they were really going to hurt you. I told Viktor I’d come smack you around, scare you a bit. So you’d be safe.”

“I wasn’t safe.” I blurted out as I tried to steady my breath. My arms were starting to burn as I held the gun with my arms straight out, and that fact pissed me off. My senses were getting muddied by my emotions as I stood in this room, hisbedroom, with him. Where he’d made me feel things I never knew I could feel, where he’d made me love him.

Mason stepped forward, and I did too, finger on the trigger. “Back the fuck up. Against the wall.” He didn’t move. “Against the fucking wall.” I screamed, and I fired the gun into the wall to the right of him.

He hissed, “Fuck, Emma. Just–”

“Who the fuck are you?” I could feel tears starting to well up in my eyes, and I blinked my eyes furiously, begging them to remain focused on my target. I knew one long blink, and that was it for me. He’d have me disarmed, and he’d have the gun.

“Emma.”

“Stop. Saying. My. Name.” I gritted out, and I wiped the tears from my face. They burned, and my vision started to become blurry as my eyes filled with water.
