As I drifted off, I found myself willing for this new job to be bearable.

I hope I like my new boss. I hope I like my new boss. I hope I like my new boss.

I chanted to myself as I drifted off into strange dreams.

ADDISON

Rebecca from HRmet me in the giant lobby of the new building I was going to be working in, and she walked me up to my desk. I eyed the bouquet of flowers and the fruit basket on my desk.

What an ugly bouquet. The gesture was nice, though.

I figured it was probably from HR, though, and not my new boss. No telling what he was going to be like.

“You can create a new login here on your desktop, and once you’re logged in, it should prompt you to fill out the new hire paperwork. When you’re done with that, send me an email, and I’ll take you in to meet the CEO who you’ll be supporting directly.” She smiled warmly at me. “Oh, the bathroom is down this hall to the left, and the kitchen all the way at the end has snacks and stuff if you get hungry.”

“Ok thanks.” I nodded with a smile and settled into my desk, taking it all in for a moment.

As Rebecca headed back down the hall. I eyed the large wooden door in front of me, hoping my new boss wasn’t going to be a jerk. I had applied to anything and everything, and while being a personal assistant wasn’t my first choice, it certainly paid better than some of the other positions I’d applied for. While I did have a degree, everything was so competitive these days, it didn’t seem to help much. So I hadn’t been picky with my applications.

Plus, here they’d scheduled me for an interview right away, and offered me the job almost immediately. It was a start, and it was something to get my feet back under me. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.

I took a big breath in and moved the ugly flowers and the fruit basket to the edge of the desk and pulled the keyboard up to me, logging onto the computer. I worked my way through the new hire paperwork, filling out emergency contact information, and banking information for payroll. I skimmed through several non-disclosures and rolled my eyes. As if what I was going to be doing was worth enough to merit a non-disclosure. I assumed I’d be fetching coffee, grabbing dry cleaning, and scheduling appointments. I was basically going to be a glorified receptionist. Not the most thrilling work, but certainly not the worst thing I could do for a paycheck, either.

When I had finished the onboarding paperwork, I wandered down the hall until I’d found the bathroom. I stood in front of the marble sink and stared at myself in the mirror. One final check before meeting the big boss. I smoothed down a few flyaways around my face and decided that was as good as it was going to get.

I went back to my desk and found an email from Rebecca in my inbox and responded to it, letting her know I was finished with the paperwork. She quickly showed up at my desk.

“Ready to meet the boss?” She asked with a warm smile.

“Ready as I’ll ever be.” I chimed.

She knocked on the tall wooden door in front of my desk, and we heard a muffled sound. “Come in.”

She pushed the heavy door open and motioned for me to follow. I squared my shoulders and entered the office behind her.

Standing looking out the window, and on the phone was a tall, broad, dark-haired man; mid conversation, he motioned for us to come in, without turning around.

As he turned around, still not looking at us, and concentrated on his call, I froze. My brain took about three seconds to fully compute. It was Damian. The room started to spin and suddenly felt disoriented and dizzy.

Completely unaware, he continued talking on the phone, speaking sternly with the utmost command. I steadied myself, willing myself to stay standing. My eyes flicked around the room in a panic, wondering if I should just bolt.

And before I could run, his eyes were on mine. I saw a flash of recognition sweep through his eyes, and then it was gone, just his cold menacing eyes locked onto mine.

“That will be all.” He hung up the phone.

“Mr. West, this is your new assistant, Ms. Addison Easton.” Rebecca looked at me, beaming, seemingly proud of her accomplishment of bringing me in here. “I think she’ll be a perfect fit for you.”

“Let’s hope so.” Damian’s gaze looked at Rebecca and she seemed to suddenly realize he wanted her gone.

“Alright, I’ll let you two get acquainted and discuss responsibilities, and Addison, you know where to find me if you need me.” She nodded and let herself out, quietly closing the door behind her.

Suddenly, the electric air between us felt deathly silent. I fidgeted, trying to figure out how to play this.

Damian's lips twitched. “Soyou’remy new assistant.”

“Uh, yes, it would seem so.”
