I didn’t like that the little shit was at her apartment one bit.

ADDISON

I leaned over the counter, and swiped the mascara up my lashes, getting ready for work, while Potato licked the water off over the shower floor.

“You act like you’ve been in the desert. Go drink your filtered water in the kitchen.” I tried to convince him.

Potato responded with a “Meow”.

I stood in front of the mirror, mindlessly curling my hair, thinking about Jack showing up yesterday. I wasn’t surprised. We’d had a short conversation where I’d let him know it was over. Since then, I had, for the most part, been ignoring his calls. As far as I was concerned, I didn’t owe him one iota more of my attention. I just needed to legally break ties with him, and finally be on the other side of everything. He knew we were over, but that didn’t stop him from begging me to come back. Saying it was a mistake. I knew the only mistake would be changing my mind. I felt sad for a moment, remembering the good times we had, and then remembering that it was all a veiled lie. I quickly felt the anger bubbling up instead. So fucking disrespectful.

I rolled my eyes, thinking about Damian towering over Jack. Damian was still hot and cold with me, and I was getting sick of it, and sick of him. One minute he was being an asshole in the office, making sure I bowed down to his power. Then the next he was paying for my annulment and standing outside my apartment like it was his job or something.

My eyes caught the diamond bracelet on my wrist. I grumbled to myself, in irritation. Sure, it was a beautiful bracelet, and I got compliments on it all the time, but it was also a lie bracelet. Something given to me under different circumstances and pretenses. Now it was just a walking reminder that I was trapped in this job, just like my wrist was trapped inside this bracelet. And it was all Damian’s fault. Everything with him was about power and control, and I fucking hated it. I smiled to myself, feeling satisfied at the look on his face when I threw it away. While it may have been a tad dramatic for me to throw away a bracelet that cost… I didn’t even know how much it cost; I’d never been more satisfied than seeing the rage in his eyes when I’d done it.

Suddenly, I had an idea as I stared fuming at the bracelet. Maybe if I could get the damn thing off, I could sell it, and pay off some of the debt I had accrued from packing up my business.

I checked the time. If I hurried, I could swing by the jeweler and see if they could get this thing off me before I had to get Damian’s dry cleaning on the way into the office. If I recalled correctly, there was a jeweler near the office that would work.

I quickly threw my hair up, and grabbed my purse, giving Potato a kiss on the head before I jetted out the door.

When I got to the jeweler, I quickly name dropped Damian's name and was whisked right back into a VIP room in the back.

“What can I help you with?” A round man came in and greeted me. “Any friend of Mr. West is a friend of mine.”

I smiled, wondering how I was going to angle this. “Hello, yes. I need to get this bracelet off, and I seem to have lost the key.” I smiled, trying to lie. I wasn’t sure if this nice round grandfatherly looking man personally knew Damian. For all I knew, he was the one who put the lock on the damn bracelet.

The round older man rolled forward, pulling the magnifying glass over my wrist on the table. “Ah yes, I know this piece. Beautiful. I modified the clasp on it just last week. Just a simple locking mechanism.”

“Are you able to get it off?”

“Oh, of course.” He turned around behind him and pulled open a drawer that had about a million bobbles in it. “Let’s see, ah yes.” His thick, stubby fingers fished a key out of the drawer that looked identical to the one I had seen Damian put in his pocket. He inserted the key into the clasp. “Viola.”

I sighed a breath of relief.

“Now don’t you go losing it. Mr. West will string me up by my toes if I’m the one responsible for letting his wife lose a precious gift like this.”

“Oh, I’m not his wife.”

He eyed the bracelet under the microscope, pointing to an inscription on the underside I’d never seen, because I’d never taken it off, except to throw it away.

“Well, maybe soon then.” He smiled.

I read the inscription:

My heart,my love.

“Yeah, maybe.”I nodded weakly, taking the bracelet and key. “Thanks so much. I’ve gotta get going, so I’m not late.”

“Of course.” He smiled at me kindly.

I burst out onto the street, feeling like my heart could beat out of my chest. I held the bracelet up in the daylight, and quickly shoved it into my purse, before someone snatched the glittering diamond tennis bracelet out of my hand and mugged me on the busy street.

My heart, my love.

What the hell.
