“Liliana,” he growled my name, and my toes curled.
“Yes, Matteo.” His hard expression instantly morphed into a softer one he only reserved for me. “I’m already yours, but if you want to put that ring in your pocket on my finger to make it official…” I rose on my toes and kissed him. “Then so be it. So, yes.” I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, and he lifted me so the tips of my toes barely touched the floor. “I’ll be your wife.”
He rested his forehead against mine, but after only a second of that, set me back on the floor, retrieved the box from his pocket, and showed me the biggest, most gorgeous piece of jewelry I’d ever seen.
Just like Matteo, the ring was simplistic but intricate. The band had filigree detailing, and the diamond—a square-cut solitaire as big as my damn eye—sparkled back.
“I wanted bigger but your hands and fingers are so tiny.”
I laughed softly as he slid the ring—so heavy—onto my finger.
“Now, say it again.” His voice was guttural, and I wondered if it was because he was filled with so much emotion.
I didn’t need him to elaborate. I knew what he wanted because it was the same as what I did. “I’m yours, Matteo.” I adopted a hard look, one he gave me so many times, but the twitch of his lips told me he found it humorous, not intimidating.
