“How can something so little snore so loud?” He teases in my ear, trying not to wake Lucy.

We took the bed, and Viper got left with the pullout couch.

I’m playing with my little girl’s hair while Spark spoons me. I’m still having a hard time being this happy and sad at the same time.

“I need to call Porchsa.” I feel him nod behind me.

“When we get to Reno. I’ll make all the arrangements.” I close my eyes and drift off, never having felt this exhausted in my life.

My dreams are full of my childhood.

But it’s Lucy playing in Neverland, not me. It’s her fighting the mermaids trying to drown her, and the damn ticking clock away a few steps behind her.

The symbolism isn’t lost on me. Danger will always follow us.

When I gasp awake, it’s to Spark holding Lucy in his lap, eating donuts.

“Ready to go home, Mommy?” I nod.

Am I ever.

CHAPTEREIGHTEEN

SPARK

Glitch is goingto kick my ass. So is Wolf, if I’m being honest with myself. We’ve been off the radar for hours. All our phones are dead.

None of us have a charging cord, and in the middle of the night on these back roads, there isn’t a twenty-four store to get one. Hell, we had to pull into a gas station and wake up the attendant to fuel up.

My girls have been asleep for a few hours, and Viper keeps giving me major side eye when he catches me turning to check on them once again. I flip him the bird and hear a small giggle come from the back seat.

“That’s bad,” Lucy laughs behind her hand, trying to be quiet to not wake her Ma.

I grin at her and place my finger on my lips.

“Shh, don’t tell your Ma. But he deserved it.” I wink at her, and her little body shakes from the chuckling.

“Issac, I need to pee.” Ah, shit.

“Looks like your fatherly duties start now,” I growl at him as he slowly pulls over and hands me a box of tissues.

“Front to back.” He grins at me.

Fucking asshole.

I’m grateful for his help, but his teasing can go straight to hell. I pull open Lucy’s door, carefully unbuckle her, and lift her into my arms. As soon as I do, Mercy wakes up and starts panicking.

“She’s ok, Lass. Just needs to go potty.” I back away from her flaying arms until she realizes we’re alright.

“Oh, um, I’ll take her. I gotta go, too.” It takes her a few seconds to wake up fully before hopping down out of the truck.

I hand her the box of tissue, relieved I get to skip this part of parenthood for just a little while longer.

“Come on, baby.” I put Lucy down, and she takes her Ma’s hand, and they walk over to a tree for some privacy.

“Lucky bastard,” Viper hisses, and I chuckle.

I look at my watch and figure we’re about thirty minutes from the clubhouse. Maybe will make it home before they notice they can’t reach us.
