“He was my boss.” I should have fucking punched the prick.

“OH! NO, not the one…you know. The one that fought for me. You know what. Not the time. Your baby girl is doing great. Some food and rest will have her running around in no time. Now, let’s see to you.” She turns to Porscha, and I pull Lucy’s toy out of my vest pocket.

“MY LION!” I kiss her temple and whisper in her ear.

“I’m going to go get your mommy. Ok?” She nods and hugs the stuffed animal to her chest.

“I’m brave like the lion after he got his courage from the wizard.” I smile at her.

“Yes, you are, lass.” I mess her curls and head back to Mercy.

“Has she said anything else?” Dad shakes his head.

“We got about ten more minutes before people start asking questions,” Abel says from the table where he has a laptop set up.

“Ten minutes to live, Lilith. Let’s make them count.” Another bullet goes into her thigh this time.

“Oops, make that three. I think I hit something important. You know, since I can’t do anything right.” Mercy circles around the woman, laying in a fetal position now, clutching her leg.

“You were supposed to marry him and give him a son! Instead, you bore him Lucifer. His brother wouldn’t bear any children. Then he died, so the accommodation needed to be changed.” The woman is entirely incoherent and rambling.

“WHO?” Mercy demands.

“YOUR FATHER!” At her words, Mercy stumbles backward.

“What?” Lilith laughs.

“You stupid child. He was never dead.” At her words, Mercy snaps the gun up to Lilith’s head again.

“You won’t kill me. I’m the only one who can tell you where he is.” Mercy shoots her and drops the gun.

“Ask God for mercy ‘cause I’m all of it.” She stares at the body for a moment and then looks up at me.

“She’s in the other room. Let me clean you up before taking you to her.” She nods mechanically.

“GOTTA GO!” Abel yells, and I know our time is up.

“I got wet wipes in the truck. Let’s move.”

When we get outside, Shock is closing the doors on an ambulance.

“We’ll follow you.” She nods at us, and we climb into the truck.

We’re just rounding the corner when the first sirens are heard in the distance. We pass a few flashing red and blue lights on our way to the clubhouse, but no one stops us.

“What are we telling the cops?” Mercy cleans the blood splatter off her arms, neck, and face.

“Abel has a statement prepared, and Blaze will have security footage of Lucy being dropped off at the firehouse.” She nods and bounces her yell.

“They’re both okay. Might need therapy, though.” That she laughs at until they turn to tears.

“What’s wrong with me that the men in my life fake their own deaths to get away from me? What the fuck kind of legacy has my daughter inherited? How am I supposed to protect her from ghosts?” I park the truck behind the ambulance and pull Mercy into my lap.

“Hey, our daughter had every man and woman in this club to help protect her now. She will be loved beyond measure. You have met my mother.” She smiles and nods.

“And when it comes to the men in your life…” I kiss her slowly.

“Try and get rid of me.”
