“I am!” She insists.

“Mercedes, he’s gone. He was killed.” Her face drains of color.

Shit.

“What?” Her lips wobble with the whispered word.

“I’m sorry, lass.” I cup her face and wipe away the tear that rolls down her cheek.

“I’ll fucking kill him.” She climbs on the table and jumps off it, running for the door.

“FUCK!”

I chase after her and catch her in her sister’s backyard, ripping a trap off a sick-ass Ducati. She puts a helmet on and hops on it just as I reach her.

“Not so fast, Mouse.” I lift her off the Ducati and hold her to my chest.

“LET GO!” She kicks and squirms, trying to break out of my hold on her.

“Never.”

If she only knew that I mean those words to the core of my soul. She is mine, and I won’t stop until she knows it.

CHAPTERFOUR

MERCEDES

I needto get to Gabriel. He’ll tell me the truth. Joaquin isn’t dead. He can’t be.

Gabe would have told me if his brother was dead.

Right?

My thoughts roll around my brain, trying to make sense of what is happening in my life. I’m yet again trapped by this infuriating fucking man.

“I need my phone.” As he drags me down the street and into my sister’s backyard.

Wait.

“How do you know this place?” I push away from him finally when he lets me go.

“I seem to know more about you than you do, Little Mouse.” He grins at my heaving chest.

The way he leers at me would normally make me see red, but when he does it, all I feel is a wave of desire that I shouldn’t.

“Stop staring at my tits, peñdejo.” I kick his shin and grin at his grunt as I push him to the ground and open the back door.

I’m dialing Gabriel’s number by the time the big Irish man stumbles inside to look for me.

“Que?” I grind my teeth.

“Is he dead?” I hear something fall on his side of the phone and grab onto the wall for support.

“No,” I whisper as my legs collapse.

“Mercy,” I hang up on his sorry ass.

How could I not have known? It all makes so much sense now. His letters stopped months ago, and the last one seemed off, as if someone else wrote it or forced him to. I glance up from the floor and plead with the man hovering over me.
