My eyes widened, shocked. I was accustomed to the sounds that cattle made, but the volume and intensity with which that sounded was unlike anything I’d ever experienced inside my home. Tenley looked at the bedroom door, confused, as another bellow bounced against the walls. Slowly, I patted her leg and she slid off of my lap. Quickly reaching toward my nightstand, I pulled open the drawer and grabbed my handgun. After what happened with Carly, I was typically a little more cautious with an out of place noise.

Wearing nothing but shorts, I slipped off of the bed and quietly padded to the door. Tenley followed cautiously, her fingers wrapping around my waistband, dressed in my shirt. Pulling the door open, I scanned the family room and saw nothing.

Another bray crashed against our ears, louder this time, and I quickly walked out of the bedroom, heading towards the stairs. She clung to me as I climbed the stairs, higher and higher, rounding the corner.

A cold breeze swept over me, winter chill cooling the inside of my house a little too deeply.

And my jaw fell open the moment I could see upstairs. I stopped on the top stair, and Tenley bumped into my backside.

Whipping her head around my torso, she gasped.

We stared in complete shock at the sight before us.

Eugene opened his mouth and let out another loud moo.

My big, black angus bull was standing in my kitchen.

Mooing.

“What is he doing in here?” she asked. I had no idea, but my head was still trying to process what I was seeing, and I didn’t say anything in response.

“Yo! Weston!” Cassidy’s voice sounded outside the open front door that swung on a broken hinge. “What the…?” He appeared in the exposed entrance to my house. I watched as his eyes slid across the shattered door and then entered my home. I followed his gaze, tracking across the room and sighing. Luckily, my kitchen wasn’t in terrible disarray, the bull had only knocked over a few things upon entering. But still, there was a bull in my home.

“There’s a cow in your house” Cassidy stated, and Tenley snorted as Eugene raised his tail and took a massive dump on my kitchen floor.

Cassidy watched as I blinked in horror, and then my brother laughed. Bending forward, he placed his hand, which was full of stuff, against his belly, and he laughed along with Tenley. Her fingers dug into my bare waist as she couldn’t contain her howling.

Tears began streaming down Cassidy’s face as he fell into a fit of hysterics. “I will fix your door today if you want some help, but that… That is all up to you, buddy,” he said between coughs, as I stared at the pile of manure that was steaming in my kitchen.

“What are you doing here?” I grumbled to Cassidy as Eugene faced us and suddenly barreled through the kitchen. He crashed directly toward Cassidy, who barely managed to dive out of the way before being trampled by the bull.

Well, at least that solved my first problem of how to get the cow out of my house. Though I was left with a pile of crap and a sort of messy home.

Cassidy grunted, dusting himself off. “Rosemary gave me some clothes to bring to Tenley. Which is when I learned she stayed the night at your house.” He rose from the ground and walked back inside, wiggling his brows.

“Seriously, all we did is—”

“I don’t need to hear any details.” Cassidy picked at the cracked door and studied it for a moment.

“Get the ranch hands out to Eugene, and find whatever part of the fence he ran through. Make sure to get rid of whatever scared him through it in the first place as well,” I instructed, and Cassidy nodded, standing up.

“About Mom last night…” Cassidy stretched forward his hand, revealing the pile of clothes he’d had clutched to his belly. Tenley blushed and quickly tapped across the floor, snatching them out of his grip. She didn’t say a word before quickly racing back down the stairs. The walls rattled lightly as she slammed the door shut behind her.

“Don’t worry about it,” I replied, sighing, and walked into the kitchen to begin picking things up. The stench from the manure was starting to make my eyes water as I set the gun on the counter and stooped to a knocked over decoration.

“Weston, Mom was out of line, but you should tell her about you and Tenley. It might help fix things.”

“One date, okay? That’s all I’m asking for, and I will,” I replied, continuing to reorganize my kitchen and sanitize things.

“I know, I know.” He leaned against the doorframe, watching me, and I lifted a brow, looking at him. He was simply hanging out, watching me work around the house, even though Eugene was on the loose and there was poop on my kitchen floor.

“What are you still doing here? Also, bring me a shovel for the crap when you come back.”

He chuckled and then furrowed his brow. “I know I’m supposed to tell you something else, but I can’t remember what,” he mumbled. “And yeah, I’ll bring one.”

“About the ranch?”

“No.”
