“Hello, Zeke,” Dillon said, leaning down to give the boy a hug. “How are things going for you today?”

“It’s good. Me and Reno are playing fetch. Do you want to play soccer later?” Zeke asked.

“I think that would be fun,” Dillon said.

Zeke smiled brightly at Dillon and then went back to his play area.

Clara loved how Dillon was with Zeke. He truly treated the little boy as though they were good friends.

“Fancy meeting a handsome guy like yourself in a place like this,” Charlie said to Ethan.

“I was thirsty and in need of a snack. I also heard that there was a beautiful woman hanging around the joint,” Ethan said.

“Oh, brother,” Clara groaned. “You two need to get a room.”

Charlie and Ethan openly flirted for a couple more minutes.

“Are we still on for tonight?” Ethan asked.

“Of course,” Charlie replied.

Charlie watched Ethan leave. She leaned against the counter and sighed.

“You shouldn’t set your sights on that man. Falling in love with him will only get you hurt,” Jamie said. “He isn’t the settling down kind.”

“I think that it’s already too late for that,” Charlie said.

The next day, Charlie packed up.

“I wish you didn’t have to go. I’ll miss having you around,” Clara said.

Charlie hugged her friend and said, “Don’t worry. I’ll be back soon.”

Then, she hopped in her car and disappeared from view. Clara knew that Charlie was only a couple of hours away, but she was still sad to see the woman she considered to be her sister leave.

Dillon

Ethan and Dillon had settled into a nice routine. They got to the store, made sure that everything was set up right, and changed the sign to “open.”

“If you stick around much longer, we’re going to have to find you a job and your own place to live,” Dillon said.

“I can just work for you as a stock boy and rent a room from you,” Ethan said.

“You want to be a moocher, huh?” Dillon laughed.

“It’s not mooching. I get paid a salary from the dragon king’s security team. I can pay my fair share,” Ethan said with mock indignity.

“That’s not how the rest of the world will see it,” Dillon said.

“The rest of the world can just suck it,” Ethan replied.

“My, my, my. Don’t we have an attitude?” Dillon laughed.

“Maybe we do,” Ethan said. “You know that I’ve never much cared about what other people think.”

“True enough,” Dillon said. “Not to change the subject, but what are you going to do with yourself now that Charlie is gone?”
