Not just wow, butwowwow.

“I couldn’t believe it, but it’s Itch, so I guess I should.”

I don’t know what that means, but the way she says it, and the way she’s looking at me, I’m pretty sure she thinks I should know exactly what it means. I stand and run my fingers over the soft fabric.

Giving her a smile, I decide to change the subject, mainly because I don’t know how to continue. I don’t know Itch. So, there’s no way I could agree or disagree with her. Not that it matters.

“Should I get this one?” I ask.

She gives me a smile, then nods and walks away, past me and straight toward the counter. I watch as she speaks to a salesperson, then points at me. A few moments later, that salesperson follows her as she makes her way back toward me.

“This is the one. Do you have it in stock, or will you have to order it?” Henli asks.

I didn’t even think about that. Granted, how would I even know? The first time I went shopping was with Itch the other day. I’ve never done anything like this before. When the salesperson starts to speak, I tune him out, my focus on the tables and chairs a few feet away.

“Piper?” Henli calls out.

I turn my head to look at her. She’s smiling, bouncing Bodhi in her arms. “Now we’ll need a dining table, some chairs, and bedroom furniture.”

Giving her a smile, I nod. I want everything to be perfect, but I don’t want to spend a lot of money trying to make it that way. I spend the rest of the afternoon choosing pieces in the furniture store and setting up a delivery date for two days before the wedding.

“Will the escrow be closed by then?” Henli asks as the salesman begins to add up the purchases and schedule the deliveries.

“I don’t know,” I admit.

She presses her lips together, then asks me to call Itch. Embarrassment washes through me, and I feel my cheeks heat immediately. I know they’re bright red; they must be. Henli doesn’t look at me, though. She’s focused on whatever document the salesman has handed her.

“Piper?” she asks, finally looking at me.

“I don’t have a phone or his number,” I whisper.

Henli’s eyes widen, then she dips her chin before digging her phone out of her back pocket. She touches the screen a few times, then brings it to her ear. Shamelessly, I listen to her side of the conversation.

“I’m at the furniture store. We’ve picked out enough to get them started, but I need Itch to come and pay for it and agree to the delivery time. Can you get ahold of him for me?”

Silence.

“She doesn’t have a phone or any way to get ahold of him.”

“Okay. Thanks. Love you, too.”

Henli shoves her phone into her back pocket, then she shifts her attention to me, a smile playing on her lips. “The guys will handle it, Brick assured me.”

“Okay,” I exhale.

She gives me a big smile, then turns to the salesman. “The men will be by today to take care of the bill and schedule everything.”

He thanks her, dips his chin, then turns away as if dismissing us, which is fine with me. I’m ready to leave this place anyway. Henli reaches out and touches my arm.

“Lunch?”

“Lunch,” I agree.

Together, we leave the furniture store. I still feel completely and totally embarrassed by what happened, and I wonder if Itch is going to see the things I picked, hate them, or think they’re too expensive and become angry with me.

My heart races at the thought, and I feel sick to my stomach. The last thing I want to do is ruin this. He’s been so kind to me—a house, promised freedom, well, as much freedom as a girl like me could ever dream of. I don’t want to mess anything up.
