“You’re okay,” he whispers.

“I’m okay.” I know he isn’t asking me a question, but I feel the need to give him an answer anyway.

My gaze searches his as he stares at me, his lips curved up into a small smile. I almost ask him about Christopher, Logan, and Douglas, but I decide against it. I don’t care, not really. All that matters is that I’m with Lance again.

“The baby?” he asks, placing his palm on my round belly.

“As far as I know, all is well.”

Lance hums, then searches my gaze with his, looking for something, but I’m not sure what. As soon as he finds it, his lips twitch into a smile and he dips his chin, resting his forehead against mine.

“Let’s get you home, buttercup.”

I never thought I would hear him call me that again. I never thought I would even see him again. But here we are. He stands, keeping me in his arms, possibly not because he wants to but because I won’t let go of him.

I cling to this man as if he is my lifeline. I don’t think I’ll ever let him out of my sight again. At this point, I’m pretty sure he will be stuck with me, clinging to his neck until we take our last breaths.

Thankfully, Lance doesn’t push me off him or even act annoyed that I’m holding on to him like there is nothing else to hold on to.

It is just him.

Just us.

I look around the warehouse. I don’t know what I expected, but it wasn’t over a dozen dead bodies littering the floor. My eyes search for three in particular. When I find them, I let out a sigh of relief.

Christopher, Logan, and Douglas. They’re gone.

“I’m free,” I exhale.

“You’re free,” Lance murmurs. “Almost.”

Wrenching my head back, I look into his eyes. Panic flows through my veins. It flows through me and doesn’t stop as my gaze searches his.

“Almost?” I whimper.

He chuckles as if he thinks this is funny. Nothing about that single word is humorous. Shifting his head forward, he presses his lips against my forehead before he speaks.

“Almost,” he rasps. “You’re mine. My woman—mine.”

Sinking my teeth into my bottom lip, I wonder if I want to be anything, anyone, or anywhere else. I don’t. This is where I want to be, and he is who I want to be with. This is my world. For the first time ever, I know where I am meant to be.

“I’m yours,” I confess.

“Yeah,” he grunts.

I think he’s going to let me down, but he doesn’t. He carries me right out of the building until he stands beside a car. I don’t pay attention to the type of car because I’m too busy watching as Charley, Justin, Legacy, Duke, and Bond empty gas cans around the outside of the building.

Then they step back and each throws a lit fire at the building before jogging away. Justin and Charley stand a few feet in front of me, but nobody speaks. We all stand in the hot, dark desert as it begins to burn.

We watch as the flames engulf the building. I can feel the heat against my face. I know my brother is in there. He’s already gone, so it doesn’t matter that his body burns. He sold me to line his pockets.

He didn’t care what happened to me, and when he knew Douglas was hurting me, that he was chasing me, he kept betraying me over and over.

As the building burns, I keep my arms wrapped around Lance. Shifting my attention from the building to his face, I wait for him to look down at me. Slowly, his focus shifts, and he grins as he finds my eyes.

“You’re okay?” he asks.

I know he wants to make sure I’m good with the fact that they killed my only family. That his body is being burned to a crisp before my eyes.
