REESE

The burgerand fries are probably not the best choices when you haven’t eaten anything in so long that you can’t even remember your last meal, but I didn’t realize how hungry I truly was until Lance pulled up to the drive-through window.

We’re sitting in the doctor’s waiting room, scarfing down the last of the food. I moan, my stomach so full that I fear it may actually explode.

“You get enough?” Lance asks, lounging back in the chair across from me.

I open my mouth to tell him that I could use some dessert when my name is called. So, I don’t say a word. Instead, I begin to stand, but Lance is already up and standing in front of me, holding his hand out for mine.

I slip my palm in his, he gently tugs me up, and together we walk toward the nurse who is standing against the door, holding it open, with a chart in her hand. She guides us to a scale and I step on and watch the numbers climb as I cringe.

Thankfully, Lance doesn’t say anything about the astronomical number that is flashed before our eyes. She guides us to the room and then starts asking me why I’m there. I’ve already explained it to the girl at the front desk, and I’m sure she knows what I’ve said to her, but I repeat myself all over again.

Repeating myself means that I have to replay the lie I’ve created. I can’t tell anyone the truth. They killed people tonight. There is no way in hell I’m going to jeopardize all these men, not for Christopher and Douglas, not for men who were going to traffic, torture, and abuse innocent women.

“I started feeling off. I haven’t had a chance to get in touch with a new OB. I’ve just moved to town. I just wanted to make sure the baby is okay.”

The nurse nods her head as she types something into the computer system. Her eyes shift to me, then slide to Lance before she clears her throat.

“And you are?” she asks as if it’s any of her business.

“I’m her man, and the father,” Lance grunts, though I can tell he’s ready to tell her to fuck off at any given moment.

Thankfully, she leaves shortly after, assuring us the doctor will be with us in a few minutes. Lance turns to me, his attention focused on mine, and I slowly shift my own to him. His eyes have darkened slightly as he tilts his head to the side.

“You wanna fuck in here?”

My eyes widen, and I burst out in laughter at his question. “Lance,” I giggle.

His eyes sparkle as his lips grin. “I needed to break the seriousness of this shit and the fact that she thought I beat you or something.”

“Do you think she thought that?” I ask, my humor instantly disappearing and my lips turning down into a frown at the thought.

“Yeah, babe, I do. The doctor will ask some probing questions, too. But that’s okay. Doesn’t bother me.”

He lies. It does bother him. It would bother anyone. “Just because of your cut?” I ask.

He hums, nodding a few times before he lifts his hand and runs his fingers through his hair.

“What did you think of me when you first saw me?” he asks as his eyes slowly find mine. They focus on my own as they search. He’s trying to gauge whether I’m being truthful or not as I answer him.

I wouldn’t lie about any of this.

“I thought you were sexy and dangerous. But I knew the men at the club were, overall, inherently good. That included you. There was something special about you, something I knew I wanted to know more about. You terrified me, Lance. In the best possible ways.”

Before he can say anything else, the door opens, and I watch as a man in a white lab coat makes his way toward the computer. He begins asking me the exact same questions the nurse did.

I answer them.

Then he hums and nods his head a few times. “It sounds like you’re probably okay, but let’s do an ultrasound, just in case. Also, I’d like to highly suggest an OB-GYN sooner rather than later.”

His strong suggestions are noted, and I agree. I need a doctor immediately. It is what I’ll be working on now that the threat and danger of being kidnapped and murdered are over with. The only priority I had for weeks was keeping myself safe, alive, and in Casa Grande.

I almost failed at that.

The doctor leaves us with the promise to return with the ultrasound machine in a few moments. I’m glad to be alone again, well, with Lance, but just the two of us. He shifts uncomfortably in his chair, and I clear my throat.

Only then does he stop, his eyes finding mine. He tilts his head to the side as he watches me for a moment. “Yeah?” he asks when I don’t say anything.
