CHAPTER 34 - MORGAN

“Morgan, I see you.Can you see me? What is this place?”

I struggled to open my eyes. A trickle of light filtered in, blinding me.

“You have to stop him. Morgan, he’s going to kill us all...”

I sat up in my bed, then looked to my side.

Instantly, my heart was in my throat. Kaye was gone.

I flung back the blanket.

Starlight was pouring in through the window.

I slid out of bed. There was a sound coming from the passageway. I moved towards it, but before I could even reach for the concealed compartment, it burst open.

My uncle stood there, his beard wild and disheveled. He scanned the room frantically.

“Kaye? Where is Kaye?” He moved inside my room and his eyes widened. “No, no. It can’t be. I’m too late. They’ve already taken him.”

“Taken him where? Where is Kaye? Where is my brother? Who has taken him, Caspar?”

“Arthur. Arthur has taken him. Arthur and his cronies. I had no idea. This is what they were planning. I suspected. Yes, I suspected the traitor was amongst us all along.”

I felt my pulse pounding in my ears. “What do you mean?”

“I should have warned you,” he babbled, ignoring me. “But there was no time. No time at all. Now the children are being slaughtered... Oh, the children.”

My uncle began wringing his hands, twisting them together. He stared wide-eyed at the empty bed where Kaye had been just hours ago.

My panic rose. This was not like my uncle. He was the calm voice of reason in the storm. Something truly terrible must have been happening for him to be acting in this way.

“What children?” I raised my voice. “What children are being slaughtered? Do you mean Kaye?”

He turned to look at me, his eyes glimmering with moisture. “Oh, Morgan, the babies. All the little babes.”
