A shadow broke away from the wall on the far side of my bed and moved towards us. I gasped.

The shadow took on the shape of a man as it crossed under the moonlight.

Fenyx.

He was not wearing his usual silver armor. Instead, he was garbed in a suit of a dark metal material. Pieces of small, strange stones, like gems, shone with a dull light on his breastplate, arranged in rows.

“You,” I spat. “What have you done with Kaye?”

The blond man smiled cruelly.

I flexed my hands by my sides, preparing myself.

“Your uncle is quite right. Your brothers are together now, or will be. Kaye is helping the king with an important task.”

“A dangerous one?”

Fenyx’s smile widened. “You might say that. In the meantime, Arthur has left you in my care.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you. Get the fuck out of my room.”

“Tsk, such language for a princess.”

I raised my hands, feeling the power running through my veins, in my blood, stronger than it had ever been.

“That’s where you’re mistaken, Fenyx. I’m no princess. You’re addressing the wife of Prince Kairos Draven Venator and the Empress of the Court of Umbral Flames and the empire of Myntra.”

And then I conjured my flames.

I had caught him off guard. A moment later, I might not have been able to touch him at all.

Orbs of flame appeared in each of my hands, and I threw them straight at Fenyx’s pretty, pretty face.

He turned to one side and raised his arm to try to shield himself. One orb hit his strange, black armor. The other hit the side of his face.

I had never heard a man scream so very loudly. The fire must have been of a very high heat.

I watched the flesh burn from the right side of his face, melting like a candle. The sickening smell of roasting flesh filled the air.

“I’ve been waiting a long time to do that. Now, shall I do more, or will you take me to Kaye?”

At my side, my uncle’s eyes were wide. “Oh, glorious. Glorious, Morgan. I had hoped, but never dared to ask. You lovely girl. My darling niece.”

They were the last words he drew.

Fenyx turned to us, his eyes filled with rage. He touched a hand to his breastplate, and a small blue square began to gleam more brightly.

Beside me, my uncle began to gasp, clutching at his throat. I turned to him in time to see blood pouring from his eyes.

He sank to the ground and I sank down with him, trying to hold him up. As if from a distance, I heard myself scream,“Uncle! Stop! What have you done?”

But in my heart, I knew it was too late. The life force had left Caspar Starweaver. And as I looked up at Fenyx with hate in my eyes, I knew what I had to do.

Slowly lowering my uncle’s body to the ground, I began to lift my hands.

There was a pricking at my neck and then pain. Incredible pain.

From behind me, I heard Tyre’s voice echoing in my ears. “I’m so sorry, my dear, but you really have been asking for this.”
