“We need to get Kaye away from the front lines,” I spoke up, not caring if I was interrupting someone else. “We need to stop Arthur. We need to take back Excalibur. And we need to stop this fucking war.”

“I don’t think anyone in this room would disagree with you, Morgan,” Merlin said with just a hint of tartness.

I flushed.

“And how would you propose that we accomplish all of that, O wise one?” Lancelet demanded, leaning across the table, her blue eyes blazing. “I mean, you’ve only just seen fit to come home to us at long last. But I assume you have a plan for how to solve all of our problems. After all, you wouldn’t have come back otherwise, would you? So, please”—she stretched out her arms—“enlighten us. What’s the plan, Morgan?”

I stared at her. At the woman who had been like my sister. There was cold bitterness in her voice. Such fury in her eyes.

And could I really blame her?

No, I could not. She was entitled to all of this. The accusations. The anger.

And I... I had to take it. Just like Draven had taken everything I had thrown at him, had let me attack him, had let me blame him. It didn’t matter that I had been wrong. He said he loved me—lovedme—and so he had stood there and let me do it.

I felt a pang of incredible shame. For Draven. For Lancelet.

So, I would not defend myself. I didn’t deserve to.

“Enough,” Merlin said to Lancelet.

The blonde girl sat down, her face still flinty.

Merlin looked at me calmly. “We are open to your ideas, Morgan.”

I cleared my throat, then stood up slowly. “You’re right, Lancelet. I should have been here. Iwantedto be here. More than you know. I doubt I’ll ever be able to convince you of that. I wish I’d never left your side.”

It was the truth. Emotion caught in my throat. I forced it down.

“I’m back now,” I went on. “And I swear I’ll do my best to be what you need. What all of you need. But Kaye... Kaye is my priority. He’s so young.”

He was so young. And I loved him. And he had called out to me in my dreams.

Merlin touched my arm gently. “We understand.”

“No, you don’t,” I said hollowly. “Because I know Kayecan’tbe my only priority. I want to run to him, but I can’t.”

I looked around the room. “He’s not the only one who is suffering. Many people are. All of you have, in your own ways.” My eyes rested on Guinevere briefly. She had lowered her head again. “So while all I want to do is go to my little brother, I know we have to deal with Arthur first. He’s the cause. He’s the reason for all of this. And we have to stop him.”

I started pacing behind my chair because I couldn’t stay still any longer.

“I can’t explain it all now, but I don’t come to you... completely empty-handed. But the tools I have at my disposal...” I thought of my powers. “I don’t know if they would be best used right now. I want to hear from all of you. I need you to tell me how you want to useme.”
