It’s like she’s able to master our powers by instinct alone.

“I do trust you,” I counter as she starts to shred the fabric. My nostrils flare when she digs deep enough to graze her skin. “Is that necessary?” I ask.

Zy’s threading his necklace through his fingers while Kornelius thumbs through a book. Given that Kornelius will be the one luring Royce, he’s working on a spell to confirm their locations. But he pauses to look over the pages at our mate.

His expression glazes over with hunger.

“It needs to look realistic,” she says. “I’ve run away and been attacked by Zane; that’s what Royce needs to believe and how he needs to find me.”

I know the plan. We’ve gone over it multiple times and brainstormed a hundred scenarios.

All of them put Issy in far too much danger.

But she’s right that I don’t have a better plan. Our timeline has been accelerated, given recent events. Even if we do seek asylum in Gold and Garnet, it’s too much of a risk to leave Royce and Zane unchecked. They’ll continue to stoke the fires between the syndicates and the Houses, leading the world into a war that’ll burn the entire realm to the ground.

They need to die.

And to kill them, Issy has a brilliant plan, one that will pit them against each other.

I just can’t accept the idea of using her as bait. Yet, I hadn’t been able to accept Zyran or Kornelius ever touching her again after what happened, either. But, here we are.

All permanently fate-bonded in this life and the next. I felt how deep the bond carved itself into my soul. I know what’ll happen if Issy dies.

I’ll go with her. There’s no doubt about that. Strangely, I’m glad to know I wouldn’t be left behind to slowly go mad.

Where she goes, I go.

Except for today—I have to watch her walk out that door with Zy as her escort. He’ll leave her at an abandoned building and then the plan is set in place.

“Your scrying spell done yet, Kor?” Zy asks impatiently.

Kor seems to reluctantly glance back down at the pages. “I’ll have to do them separately. One for vampire blood and another for warlock.”

“Get on it,” I snap, not hiding the edge to my voice.

I’m still pissed off at him. Issy might have forgiven him, but I won’t.

Not anytime soon, anyway.

Issy ruffles at my tone. “Jasper, can I have a word with you? Alone?”

That doesn’t sound good.

“Of course,” I say, softer this time.

She nods. “Zy, stay with Kor and help him with the scrying spell. I’m going to talk to Jas about what we’re trying to do here.” She storms out of the room, her gauzy dress flowing in her wake.

Like a kicked puppy, I follow her.

When did I get so soft?

Chapter38

Issy

Itake Jasper out into the hall, glad to hear his footsteps behind me.

Zy and Kor have excellent hearing, so I head to the lower level that has a living area where we can talk.
