Before Kor can respond to our usual banter, his head shoots up and his previously amber eyes turn white.

“Shit,” I curse, throwing my shot glass and rushing to his side.

Because when Kor’s eyes turn white, that means a bunch of souls just entered the death plane.

Something that can have dire consequences for my brother, a vampire hybrid with one foot forever in the afterlife. It’s why we hardly ever leave the suite. The proper spiritual reinforcements are in place inside those walls, and while the airplane has been reinforced, too, it’s apparently not enough.

Grabbing my necklace with one fist, I set my hand on his arm and try to stabilize him.

He’s looking past me and his skin is going translucent.

Not good.

Cursing again, I rip off my glasses. “Kor! Look into my eyes.”

That command would kill just about anyone else, but not my brother.

This is how I can share his burden.

I grunt when he obeys and his death-infused eyes lock onto me.

Fuck.

He holds my gaze, sending the power of death through my body as it locks around my soul like heavy chains. I admire him for how he lives with this burden every day.

While I propel death, he absorbs it.

“The spirits are pulling me in, Zy,” he says through gritted teeth. “I’m not going to be able to stop it.”

I don’t even want to know what’ll happen if Kor spirits out of a moving airplane to whatever massacre that’s called him.

Because that’s how his power works. When a person or creature dies, its spirit creates a vacuum in this plane as it moves to the next.

Kor has told me it feels like a black hole, and the more spirits that are moving at once, the less control he has over his ability.

Because it’ll suck him and anyone he’s touching right into the death site.

He can’t travel to the death plane, luckily, but it does force him to create tunnels, or “pockets,” in our own realm.

My vision sparks with intense white flashes, warning me that we’re about to teleport out of a moving airplane to the gods know where.

“Kor!” I shout as I grip his forearms and look into his eyes.

His magic washes through me, burns my insides, and consumes me alive.

Whether I want to or not, I’m going with him this time.

A scream rips out of my fracturing chest as my soul is sucked into time and space and we’re thrust into the abyss.

Chapter11

Issy

A few minutes earlier…

What are you doing?!I shout into my sister’s mind.

I’m both terrified for her safety and worried about Jasper’s soul.
