Because the dead spirit of a patriarch is trying to invade his body. Fallon’s presence had pushed Daithi out before, but he evidently found a work-around.

I’m tossing this bastard back to the death plane,my sister informs me as she releases another wave of power.

She’s talking about Daithi O’Neely, not Jasper, the male she’s releasing a relentless wave of death magic on. He just so happens to be Daithi’s chosen host.

A scream rips out of Jasper’s throat as he claws at his chest.

I double over when a strange thump hits the left side of my rib cage, then does it again.

Is that… Jasper’s heart beating?

It feels wrong, though, as if his heart isn’t meant to function in such a basic way. He’s some sort of vampire hybrid, so that doesn’t surprise me.

Whatdoesis the fact that I can feel what he’s feeling at all.

Is Daithi doing this?I wonder as I rake my nails over my skin.

If this isn’t the work of the patriarch, then that means it’s the fated bond becoming permanent even without consummating it.

I turn to the archangel, desperate for help. If this continues, I won’t be of any use to anyone.

And I certainly won’t live long enough to understand why my spirit has decided to bond to Jasper’s without following the rules of our world.

Fated mates have a choice, but I don’t feel like fate is giving me one right now.

The archangel won’t look at me. Nolan is watching the scene unfold with grim features. His muscles are coiled and he’s radiating lethal energy—but this isn’t his domain.

He’s an agent of death, not an agent of thealready dead.

I do notice, however, that he has a potion in his hand. It’s a rare one—the same he used to bring Fallon here.

A portal spell.

My sister doesn’t seem very keen on the idea of running away, though.

Fallon has her hands on Jasper’s shoulders, pushing him down with the raw force of her incredible magic. Daithi’s soul warps and bends in response. Wisps of him appear like ghostly fragments, seeping in and out of Jasper’s form in waves.

But it’s costing him. Jasper’s skin breaks open as Daithi thrashes within it, as if desperately trying to root himself.

He’s using the fate bond to link himself to Jasper,I realize.

Fallon is strong, but not strong enough to overpower fate. If she were, then she would have overthrown Nikolas during those three terrible years she was under his control.

Please, stop!I shout in her head as I cling to her shoulders.

She’s going to kill him at this rate—assuming it doesn’t backfire on her first. Jasper’s death touch is in full effect and it’s a miracle that Fallon hasn’t gone under from it.

But she is the only witch I know who can travel to the death plane—andreturn. She’s more familiar with its energy than most and that experience alone is enough to ground her in her own flesh.

For now.

This has to be done, she shoots back at me.

But you’re going to kill him!I return, widening my eyes.

She sets her jaw. That’s the idea.

I’m not sure if she’s talking about Daithi, Jasper, or both.
