“Just making sure you won’t miss my cock too badly,” he whispered.

“Oh my god, you’re so much worse than I am. Yeah, get the hell out of here if Gabe said you can skip today.”

“Hear that, Will? I’m on my way.”

A chuckle. “See you when you get here, loser.”

Ash ended the call before they said anything else, sweeping Sloane in for a deeper kiss. “Sorry, sorry.”

“You better be,” she grumbled while still smiling. “But really, go. The sooner you go, the sooner you can be back.”

He kissed her one more time. “Have fun today.”

“We’ll try,” I called after him.

“Gonna go take care of Mango,” Sloane touched my shoulder. “I’ll meet you downstairs.”

We still had some time. “There’s a smoothie in the fridge for you.”

“Thank you.”

I smiled to myself as she left the room. Her thanking me didn’t mean she would drink it. I’d have to make sure. But at the moment, I was still stuck on what Will said about Ian. The disparity between his behavior here and elsewhere seemed strange. So I did what anyone could do: I looked him up.

He’d worked with plenty of companies, sometimes for residencies, sometimes for a few years. It wasn’t uncommon. Some creative directors didn’t like to stay anywhere long term so they could work with more people. Or maybe there was a different reason. Maybe he didn’t stay because he couldn’t.

I made a note to look into it further, because it was a mystery that didn’t make sense. But we didn’t have time for me to fully dive in. Later, when we got home, I would. There were some people I could call who’d worked with him before.

Dressing quickly, I went downstairs and looked in the refrigerator, seeing the smoothie exactly where I left it. Sloane sat at the kitchen table putting on her shoes. She glared at me when I set it down on the table. “I’m okay.”

“You will be.”

“Jace.”

“Drink at least half of it, baby girl. We’ve been fucking you so much I’ve barely been able to feed you.”

She sighed. “Fine.” But as Gabriel came down and grabbed the keys to the car, I saw her smile.

CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN

________

SLOANE

Everyone knew.

I’d invited the whole company to the ceremony, knowing many of them wouldn’t be able to make it on such short notice. But now even the people who I hadn’t invited knew. Jerry congratulated me on my way in with Jace. Gabriel took the car around the back of the theater.

Madame Hubert was already in the studio for company class, and she caught my hand. “I’m sorry I could not come to your party, but you looked beautiful, dear.”

“Thank you, Madame.”

She leaned in to speak lower. “I hope to see that happiness on your face more often now.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’ve trained many dancers, and the best always have something that drives their movement. Yours has always been sadness. You hide it well, but I hope it will be happiness from now on.” She patted my shoulder. “You’ve never been better than when you have been happy these past few weeks.”

“Thank you.”
