Fine. You want to be a bitch? I’ll treat you like a bitch. You signed up for this. Never forget that.

I’m sorry. You know how I get. Sometimes I see red and say things I don’t mean. And I know you. You respond better when I’m soft, so I’ll try to be soft for you.

Just don’t keep making me mad, darling. I’ll treat you so right.

It’s okay. Everything’s going to be fine. I promise.

Already thinking of all the ways you’re going to make it up to me.

I’ll see you soon.

Sloane’s silence had driven him to a place that was dangerous, and for these last few days, it wasn’t even intentional silence.

It was a good thing she’d agreed to move in with us, because her apartment wasn’t safe anymore. “You’re not going back there alone,” I said.

She shook her head, turning just enough to lean on Asher’s shoulder and cling to his arm. I hated the way she looked right now. Even smaller than her slight frame, skin white as a sheet, gaze unfocused and distant.

“You’re going to be okay,” Ash said. “We’re not going to let anything happen to you.”

My firefly shook her head. “Everything he’s saying? I never said I was his. He said that, not me. I don’t know what he’s talking about. I just… I don’t understand. He wasn’t like this when we were doing whatever the hell it was we were doing. Like, I drew away because the charm wore off, and I knew he wouldn’t be happy. But I didn’t expectthis. How did I get it so wrong?”

Ash cradled her. “You didn’t get it wrong, sweetheart. Someone hiding who they are and showing their true colors later isn’t your fault. He feels wronged and entitled when he has no right. This has nothing to do with you.”

“Feels like it has to do with me.”

I put the phone down before I hurled it against the wall so she never had to look at those messages ever again.

“You know what I mean,” Ash whispered. “There’s nothing you did to cause this, and there’s nothing you could have done differently. He’s a dick, and that’s that.”

“Okay.”

Sloane’s voice was so small, I wanted to pin her underneath me again and pleasure her until she screamed the way she had at the end of her heat. Like she was an exploding star. So strong, so beautiful, and so free.

“I asked Noreen to call you if she saw Craig again.”

She reached for her phone. “I don’t have any calls or texts from her. Let’s see.”

Once more the phone was on speaker, but I didn’t think we’d be laughing this time.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Noreen,” Sloane said, her voice a little shaky. “It’s Sloane from across the hall.”

“Oh!” The woman’s voice picked right up. “Hi, honey. You okay?”

“Yeah.” It was a lie. “I know Ash mentioned someone left me a note. Have you seen or heard him again?”

Noreen made a disgusted sound. “Yes. I’m sorry I didn’t call you. It slipped my mind. He was here again the day after your handsome Alpha came by. Pounded on the door. I told him to keep it down and to get out. Haven’t seen him since.”

“Okay, thank you, Noreen.”

“You’ve been gone for a while. You sure you’re okay?”

Sloane allowed herself a small smile. “I am. I went into heat, so I’ve been lying low. But I’ll make sure to say hello when I stop by.”

“Make sure you do.”

“Bye.”
