Gabriel brought his big fingers down softly onto the child's head. He had Lily’s hair, a big bushel of it. The eyes that peered from beneath his lids were already glistening, and she knew he was going to have his father's eyes.
“Look at this guy,” Gabriel murmured. “He is gorgeous, just like his mother."
Lily stayed at the healer's for a day with their son to make sure their health was up to snuff. The next day, they took him home to the nursery Lily had painted.
He was a lively little one from the get-go. Lily felt like her chest was going to burst open from all of the love she already felt for him and the love she saw pouring from Gabriel's eyes.
The pride celebrated the birth of the heir to Gabriel's alpha throne a week later. Claire ran it and held onto her grandson the entire time. It was a day shimmering in sunlight, summer refreshing the richness of the Earth reflected in the smiles and laughs of the entire community.
“His name is Jack,” Lily said, making the official announcement to everyone. “And he will be a mighty tiger.”
Gabriel, Lily, and Jack settled into their life in the community. Never did they think of the Lantern's Eye again in a way that disrupted their peace. When he was of age, Jack would be informed about it. But until then, it would stay hidden, unable to harm anyone that Lily loved.
They spent their evenings on the porch. A month after Jack had been born, Lily was holding him in a sling under a red-stained sky. They were at the height of summer, and she wasn’t wearing a bra to allow herself the ability to slip her breast out the moment Jack became fussy.
Gabriel gazed at them. It still made her feel reborn. She knew him, every dark corner of his soul, and she would understand all of him from there and in the hereafter. She never thought that heaven was real until she met him.
“He's going to be a great alpha,” Gabriel said as Jack nuzzled his mother. “I can already feel it.”
“If he’s anything like his father, then he’ll have no choice but to be incredible,” Lily said, smiling up at him.
He kissed her, and she was breathless. This was the life she’d been dreaming of, and she would never take it for granted.
