“You didn’t think I knew?” I asked with a sneer.
“Knew what?”
“Oh, let’s not pretend you don’t know,” I scoffed. “Your whole story is bullshit. You’re not a fucking nanny. You never have been. You’re a washed-up waitress tired of busting your ass for pennies and thought you’d hook the rich guy desperate for childcare.”
Her mouth dropped open. “You knew?” she whispered.
“You don’t think I would do a little investigating into the woman I let watch my daughter?”
“When?” she asked.
“I started picking up on little clues here and there.” I shrugged. “For one, I’ve never seen a nanny with a bunch of tats. Your car is a piece of shit. No one would let their kid ride in that death trap. You’ve never done a school pickup and didn’t know you’d have to show them your ID to be on the list. You tried to send Lily with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, something every nanny knows is a no-no. Need I go on?”
“Why didn’t you say anything?” she asked.
“Because Lily liked you,” I said. “I thought I’d give you a chance. Have to say I’m regretting that. Your education was bullshit. Your references, let me guess, you’ve never been to Ireland.”
She sighed and shook her head. “No.”
“I never should have hired you,” I said. “You only took the job because you saw dollar signs. Did you plan to seduce me? Was that part of the plan to get more money out of me?”
“No!”
“It’s cool, you wouldn’t be the first woman to try that tactic,” I said. “But you should have left Lily out of it.”
“I did nothing to Lily but take care of her,” she shot back. “I love that little girl.”
“I should have fired you the day I knew,” I said with disgust.
“Don’t act like I’ve been a problem,” she said. “I’ve taken very good care of her. She loves me and I love her. She loves hanging out with me. She laughs and plays and has a great time. I would never do anything to intentionally hurt her!”
I rolled my eyes and scoffed. “Oh, spare me the dramatics. You’re just a nanny who thinks she’s hot shit. You’re replaceable, you know that right?”
Her face turned red with anger and she clenched her fists. “You’re a cruel man. You have no idea how hard I’ve worked to take care of Lily. I’ve done everything to make sure she’s happy and healthy.”
I turned back to her, feeling a sudden sense of amusement. “Oh really? Everything?” I asked, my voice dripping with sarcasm. “Did you forget when you just made her biggest fears come true?”
“I didn’t do anything,” she said. “What about you? You’re just as culpable in all of this. You knew I wasn’t a real nanny but you hired me anyway. You’ve let me spend these last few weeks with her. You certainly didn’t have an issue with me last night, did you? I could ask you if you were just out for one thing.”
I raised an eyebrow at her audacity. “Excuse me? What are you insinuating?”
“Don’t play dumb with me,” she said, taking a step closer. “I know how men like you operate. You think you can have everything, including your daughter’s nanny.”
I shook my head in disbelief. “You’re delusional. You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I know enough,” she said, her voice low and husky. “I saw the way you looked at me last night. The way you touched me. You wanted me just as much as I wanted you.”
I took a step back. “Don’t you dare act like I seduced you. If I remember correctly, you’re the one who crawled into my lap and asked me to fuck you.” I made sure to say the last very quietly. I would hear Lily come down the stairs, but just in case. That was not what I needed her to hear.
“I’m not ashamed of what happened,” she said, taking another step toward me. “You’re the one who needs to feel ashamed.”
“I don’t feel ashamed,” I said, moving away from her. “Lily deserves better than you. You’re a fucking liar.”
“I’ll admit that I lied to you when I first met you, but I’ve given you no reason to think so since then.”
I laughed. “I have all the reason I need.”
“Are you that worried about what will happen when Lily finds out you like screwing her nannies and that’s why they keep leaving?”
