“I have never fucked a nanny,” I snapped, hating how defensive I sounded.

“You’re the one who made a pass at me,” she said. “And when I didn’t turn you down you loved every minute of it.”

I didn’t say anything. I couldn’t say anything. She was right. On both points. I did love everything about that night. I couldn’t make myself feel ashamed. There was no point.

“You’re an adult,” I finally said. “Don’t you have anything better to do than to try to get at me?”

“I’m not trying to get at you,” she said. “I just want you to know that you’ll never find a nanny who cares about your little girl as much as I do. You can say what you want about my lack of qualifications but I would never leave her. I would never lie to her which is why you’re pissed at me.”

I shook my head. The argument was getting nowhere. Nothing was going to get solved by us insulting one another. It wasn’t going to make Lily feel better. It wasn’t going to stop Lily’s pain.

“You’re no longer welcome to spend the night,” I said, as if that was some big insult.

She rolled her eyes. “I wouldn’t dream of it. I would hate for you to think my willingness to stay over and take care of Lily first thing in the morning was some weird seduction tactic.”

I wanted to say something more. I wanted to fire back something cutting, but I didn’t have it in me. There was no point. She was right. Lily was all that mattered. I needed to take care of her and that meant putting Dee at arm’s length. No more sex. No more anything. She was just the fucking nanny—until she quit and I had to find another one.

She stomped toward the front door.

“I need you here in the morning!” I shouted as she opened the door.

Dee stopped and turned to look at me. “I’ll see you tomorrow. I’ll take care of her.”

“I know you will,” I said, my voice cracking.

“She’ll be okay.”

I nodded. I didn’t want to watch her leave. I didn’t want to watch her walk out the door.

I stood there by the window and waited for the sound of her car to disappear. I turned and looked upstairs. I needed to talk to Lily and reassure her Dee wasn’t going anywhere. The only problem was I couldn’t promise her Dee would stay on as her nanny after what I said and did.

I couldn’t think of a way to make it up to her, but I had to try. I didn’t know how I was going to do it or what I would say, but I knew I needed to talk her out of her room. I couldn’t have her hiding up there any longer.

It was time for us to have our talk. It was time for me to figure out what I was going to do about the situation. Lily deserved for me to do something. I had to figure out a way to make it right.

I took the stairs two at a time. Lily was still sitting on the bed. She looked up at me as I crossed the room. “Hey,” I said.

Lily stood and slipped her arms around my waist. She buried her head against my stomach. “I’m scared. Dee’s going to leave. They all leave.”

“I know. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” I held her close. I knew I had to make it right. I had to do something.

“I’m sorry I was mean to Dee,” she whispered. “I didn’t mean it.”

“I know,” I replied. “You weren’t mean. Dee loves you. She’s going to be here in the morning to take you to school.”

“Is she mad at me?”

“No,” I said. “Not even a little. We just want what’s best for you. Dee is a good nanny. Let’s not try and make a love connection just yet.” I teased and gently nudged her arm. “Thanks for trying, though.”

She wiped her tears. “You like her.”

“I do, but it’s complicated when you’re an adult,” I said. “Sometimes, we just have to let things happen.”

“But Dee is going to come back?”

“Yes.” I nodded.

If Dee didn’t come back, I would hunt her down and really give her a piece of my mind. She didn’t get to hurt my little girl because she was pissed at me.
