My gaze lands on every face I can make eye contact with and I raise my voice. “I said I need the freaking hallway!”

Sneakers skid. Heels click against tiles.

People rush to obey my command.

In three seconds flat, the corridor is clear.

Miles remains. Idiot.

“You’re wasting your time, Hawk,” he says. “Shanel loves me.”

“Do you think I’m a fool? Three weeks ago, you couldn’t stand the sight of her. You mistreated her and ignored her. Now all of a sudden, you want me to buy this BS?” I snarl at him. “You’re lucky I’m still letting you breathe for the way you used to hurt her.”

“Hawk, that’s enough.”

I step toward Miles. Lowering my voice to a threatening whisper, I say, “Unless you want me to make a call that’ll leak all your father’s dirty secrets to the press, you’ll get the hell out of my sight.”

Miles snarls at me, but he knows I’m good for the threat.

“Hawk, if you let him go, I’ll tell you the truth,” Shanel yells. “Just leave him alone.”

I scowl at Miles. Jut my chin at the exits.

Slowly, he backs away and disappears.

I lean against a locker, fold my arms over my chest and steady my breath. “Now,” I level Shanel a firm look, “what’s really going on?”

“I hate you.”

“No you don’t.”

“Yes.”

“Speedy, you’re wasting both our time, so just get to the point.”

A long tense moment winds between us.

I stare at her, urging the truth out of her lips as she stands there in defiance.

Finally, she glances away. “I’m leaving.”

“For a trip?”

“Forever.”

“Explain.”

“I don’t belong here.”

“Says who?”

“You exist in a movie, Hawk,” she blurts, her eyes firm with conviction. “And I exist… somewhere else.”

“What?”

“I’ve been looking for a way to escape this place and I found it.” She licks her lips. “In a few days, I’m going home.”
