I stare at the card.

There’s a cursive font with my name on the front.

Hawk.

One side of my lips tilts up. With sure movements, I tear the card in half.

The rip echoes loudly, booming through the air like a bomb.

I hear a gasping sound.

It’s coming from the girl.

Barclay laughs softly behind me. I ignore him and focus on tearing the card into tiny pieces. I do it while staring at her, making sure she gets the message loud and clear.

I don’t know what her deal is. I don’t know what she wants from me. Or maybe she’s one of the few with genuine feelings. Either way she’ll be disappointed.

I sprinkle the remnants of the card over her head.

Tears are bubbling in her eyes now. Her neck bends as if the weight of the world is in those tiny paper scraps. As if a cement block is on her chest.

Without another word, I slip a hand into my pocket and walk away.

Her pathetic sobs reach my ears.

I close myself off to the guilt in the form of my mother’s voice.

You didn’t have to be so rude, Hawk.

I miss my mother. Her soft tone is a sweet refrain from the pain and anger that’s always charging through my head. She wouldn’t be proud of me, but then… I don’t really give a damn because she’s not here.

My loping stride carries me down the rest of the hallway.

I don’t feel guilt.

I don’t look back.

Suddenly, the door to the classroom ahead bursts open and a girl skates into my path. I jump away to avoid a collision.

My body protests from the sudden movement. As pain knifes through me, an angry hiss tears past my lips.

I glare at the girl who’d dare to get in my way.

At first, all I see is a head of thick, dark brown curls.

Then she glances up and I get a good look at her face—skin the color of warm coffee, plump lips, high cheekbones.

Freaking gorgeous.

Brown eyes, deep as two expanded galaxies, slam into mine.

I open my mouth to tear into her, but nothing comes out.

Instead, there’s a piercing ringing in my ears.

The sound of worlds ending. Galaxies crashing. Reality bending.

My gash throbs.
