This visit should be as fun as a thorn in my scrotum.

MARYBELL

Milady traveled up here in her condition and I can’t even greet her properly because the alpha jerk is holding me over his shoulder. I don’t care if I’m barefoot or naked running laps in the snow—when my princess comes, I must greet her the way she ought to be greeted. A simple curtsey would do. I didn’t manage even that.

Lenox closes the door behind my princess and the Summer fairy Princess Fleur, who is already inside the cabin, likely sniffing out the lycan pheromones. And the Ott alpha lycan probably reeks of dominance and, judging by the way he approached me when he decided he’ll breed me, confidence in his bedroom prowess. Fleur would enjoy him.

“Put me down,” I demand. When he does, I fix my hair and my clothes the best I can before I start lowering into a curtsey.

The princess grabs me by the shoulders and hugs me. “Oh, Marybell, I thought I lost you forever.”

“No, no, only for a few spans, and look, we’re back together.”

“We are,” she cries, and now I cry too, and we hang on to each other like we hung on to each other after we reunited outside the Lyan city walls the hordes patrolled. We swore never to separate after that, but we had to part when Lenox snatched her, and again now, when she needs me most.

“I’m sorry I left you that way, milady.”

The princess holds me at arm’s length. “Marybell, I’m not your lady anymore.”

“You will always be my lady.”

She shakes her head and sniffs. I search the space for a handkerchief at the same time that she reaches between her swollen breasts. She pulls out a handkerchief and dabs her eyes. “You must address me as Gloriana from now on, and I want to be your best friend.”

“I thought we are best friends already.”

“We are. We are. But…” She glances at the lycan standing behind me and listening intently. I can tell. His entire body is leaning into me, making my back tingle with heat.

“But you’re relieved of your duties to the Kilseleian crown. Do you understand?”

I understand she’s letting me go, as a servant, as a lady-in-waiting, as her constant companion, and giving me permission, not that I need it, to live my life free of any guilt that I’m betraying her. She came all the way out here because she knew I could not let go of her unless she released me. “Thank you for coming, Princess.”

“You’re welcome. Can we stay for tea?”

“You can stay as long as you please.”

Lenox chokes on a few curse words.

Fleur breaks the awkwardness. “This is a beautiful home for breeding. I want one.”

We all turn her way as she settles cross-legged on the floor by the fireplace and takes off her furry hat and coat. I resist the urge to grab her fur coat off the floor and hang it somewhere. Same with Gloriana’s when she removes it and drapes it over her arm.

“We’re out of coat hangers,” I say.

“Never needed one, so we have none,” the lycan counters. He stretches an arm toward the living space, a universal “welcome, come in” signal.

“For as long as we still have our manners, we’ll be fine,” Gloriana says, draping her coat over his outstretched arm.

From the corner my eye, I catch Fleur nodding in approval. A subtle message for the lycan alphas to behave.

I take Gloriana’s hand and pull her over to the couch so we can sit together.

Lenox remains at the door. “Is this the only exit?” he asks Seith.

“There’s another one at the far left of the window and another upstairs near me bed.”

“Secured, I presume.”
