“It sounds like you still could—with Kendall,” Jude said.

I got the distinct impression he was encouraging me. And I didn’t know what to make of this unexpected support.

“But wouldn’t that be weird for you?” I asked.

A dry laugh escaped him. “Oh yeah. It would be weird as fuck.”

“Because she’s your ex,” I said, trying to understand.

“There’s that. But I was thinking more of the fact that I’m at the age that I could have a kid the same age as yours.”

I laughed, running a hand over my beard. “Yeah. Now that would definitely be weird.”

“Right?” He chuckled. “But maybe it could be cool too.”

Wow. I hadn’t seen that coming.

I pulled onto Nate’s street and put the car in park. I turned to Jude and frowned. “Really?”

“Yeah.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Look, I appreciate you taking my feelings into consideration. But you’ve always told me that it’s my life and I should do what’s right for me. I’m sorry I didn’t see that before with you and Kendall. But I do now. So, if having more kids feels right to you…”

I swallowed back my emotion. “Wow. I’m…” I was shocked. “Thank you.”

He opened the car door. “Just don’t expect me to babysit,” he teased.

I stayed in the car, staring straight ahead. Still trying to make sense of my conversation with Jude. Had he really just given me his blessing?

I felt lighter than I had in weeks.

If it was my life, and I should do what was right for me, I knew what the answer was. Kendall. Always Kendall.

CHAPTERTWENTY-EIGHT

“Uh.” Emmy flopped down on Mom’s couch. I’d already deflated the air mattress and put it in the storage closet. “Why do you always get the best placements?”

Emmy was right. When the Hartwell Agency had called to offer me my new position, I’d thought it was a joke at first. House-sit a luxury apartment in Paris? Yes, please!

It was a dream come true.

I’d get to practice my French daily. I’d get to live in the most amazing home. And even though their winter was much colder than ours, there were so many things I was looking forward to. The museums. The culture. The food.

“I thought you loved Brooklyn,” I said as I held up two sweaters, debating which one to pack.

“I do.” She smiled. “She really is the sweetest kid.” She pointed to the black sweater. The dressier one. “This one. And take that silver metallic accordion skirt.”

I furrowed my brow. “I doubt I’ll be going out much.”

She lifted a shoulder. “Always good to be prepared. Besides, it’s Paris freaking France. You don’t want to look like a tourist, right?”

“Right.” I laughed and added both the sweater and the skirt to my suitcase. “I wish you could go with me.”

She crossed her legs. “Me too, girl.”

“Can’t you come for even a week?” I pleaded. “I mean, it’s a seven-room luxury apartment overlooking the Eiffel Tower.”

She groaned. “I know, Kendall. I know. And if I could, I would. But I already have to skip Christmas with my family in Aspen because Nate’s about to start filming on location.”

“I know,” I smiled. “I’ll miss you.”
