“Yes,” he sighed. “And no. I just…” He smoothed his beard. “Look. Seeing you with the kids at the event, well, it got me thinking. And you should be with someone younger. Someone whose life goals are more aligned with your own.”

I wanted to laugh. At this point, I wasn’t sure I had any life goals. But I wasn’t going to tell Knox that because I knew it would only piss him off.

Instead, I inched closer. Needing to touch him. Reassure him.

“I’m too old for you,” he said as if trying to warn me off.

I barked out a laugh. “Are you kidding? I don’t think most people would bat an eye at our age difference. Now, the fact that I dated your son…that may raise some eyebrows. But you being older than me—”

“Not just a little older,” he interrupted. “I’m twentyyearsolder than you.”

I waved away the distinction. “No one cares. And it’s a moot point. No one is going to know about us anyway.”

“MaybeIcare,” he roared. “Maybe I want people to know about us. But do you know what that would do to Jude? To you?”

“To me?” I asked, trying to understand.

“I’m only trying to protect you.”

“That’s not your job,” I said. “I’m a big girl. I can take care of myself.”

“I know that.” He cupped my cheek, and I leaned into his touch. “But maybe I like taking care of you.”

“Then take care of me,” I said, wrapping my arms around his neck, sensing his resistance waning. I waited until his eyes met mine. “Like this. Because you’re the only person who can give me what I want.”

He evaluated me a moment. “This is really what you want?”

“Yes, Knox.Thisis what I want.”

He leaned closer until our noses were touching. Our foreheads kissing. So much energy bounced between us as he gazed into my eyes, the tension growing until it finally snapped.

Then everything happened in a blur of movement and passion as we lost ourselves in the kiss. In each other. Giving and taking exactly what we wanted, over and over again.

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

Weeks flew by in the blink of an eye—a blur of work, soccer, and Kendall. Every spare moment I had, I spent with her. She’d stayed over almost every night for the past few weeks, but I hated the reality that crashed down on me at the start of each day. Because then we’d go back to the office, back to pretending there was nothing between us. We might be sneaking around, but I wanted her with me all the time.

The sun was barely cresting the horizon when Kendall rolled out of bed. I groaned, tugging on her hand. “Don’t go.”

“I have to. All my stuff is at my mom’s.” She leaned back over and kissed me, her hair caressing my skin. “But I’ll be back later.”

“You wouldn’t have to leave at all if you’d just move in.”

“Right.” She laughed, but I wasn’t joking.

I was still traveling regularly for games. And when I wasn’t, I wanted her at my house. In my bed. In my arms.

I still worried that she’d want children someday, but I realized that was a conversation for the future. Right now, we were happy. And that was all that mattered. The question of our future—and what that would mean for my relationship with Jude—would have to wait.

“I’m serious.” I tucked her hair behind her ear. I’d flown home late last night—as soon as the game had ended—just so I wouldn’t have to spend another night without her. “Think about it.”

“About what?” she asked, placing her hand on my bare chest.

Fuck, she was gorgeous. Her full lips pink and pouty. Her skin warm and welcoming. I didn’t ever want her to leave.

“Moving in with me,” I said.

Surely this hadn’t come as a surprise. She practically lived here already. I’d even had my stylist add new clothes to Kendall’s side of the closet so she wouldn’t have to pack a bag. Shockingly, she hadn’t put up much of a fight about it. Probably because I’d persuaded her with a few orgasms.
