“Maybe you should’ve taken more time off. Or the desk job is still an option. I’m sure they will take you back,” he said.

“That would be great if it was what I wanted. But you know I’m not that person. Sitting behind a computer screen all day would drive me crazy.” At one time it might have been enough, but not anymore.

I was never a fully active field agent, but I went out with them on many cases. Brian would let me ride along with him even when I wasn’t on the case. I learned a lot during that time. Stuff that made me even better at my job. There was so much they didn’t teach you in books or in college. Stuff that I had not even learnt during my residency. It took hands-on experience for me to put all the pieces together.

Too bad that the last hands-on experience was my last.

“What do you think about your new boss?” Brian asked.

“I haven’t been here long enough to form an opinion.”

Brian laughed. “That’s odd. You usually can sum up a guy in just one conversation. Hell, I’ve seen a guy in a bar approach you just wanting to buy you a drink and you sized him up and shut him down before he could even ask.”

“I amnotthat bad.” Diana probably would agree with Brian, but that didn’t mean either of them was correct. I’d dated plenty when I had time. I was just pickier than others.

I wouldn’t have shot Draven down if he asked to buy me a drink.

Thoughts like these were inappropriate. He was my boss and even if I was attracted to him, I couldn’t let him know. He might be okay with it, but I sure wasn’t.

“I’ve dealt with Draven a few times, but it is his brother Damien who I have worked with the most.” Brian shared

“Sounds like you’re not a fan of Draven.” I could hear it in Brian’s voice.

“I wouldn’t say I dislike the guy, but he’s a bit too laid back for me.”

I may have witnessed that myself. “Laid back doesn’t mean he isn’t qualified to do his job.”

“You’re right. And Damien speaks highly of Draven. I respect Damien’s opinion. And if I thought for a moment that Draven couldn’t protect you, I’d never have recommended you for the job,” he stated.

Protect me?“I don’tneedprotection,” I snapped, insulted that he would even suggest such a thing. “Did you tell Damien that I did?” His silence pissed me off. “You did. How could you do that?”

“I didn’t exactly tell him you needed protection. I said that you had gone through a difficult patch and to let me know if you were having any issues.”

That was even worse. Now I know they are going to be looking for me to have a problem. “What kind of issue exactly?”

“I was vague.”

“Does Draven know?” I asked.

“He called me before you arrived. But for the record, I never told either of them that you’d been shot,” he stated.

I was grateful for that. “Why did Draven call you?”

“Don’t overthink it. It is perfectly reasonable for an employer to inquire about a new employee. Usually, it is done through a human resource department, but since he doesn’t have one, he called me directly.”

“And an ex-employer should ideally only verify employment, not tell them that I need to be watched over,” I reminded him.

“Okay. I overstepped. But I was acting as a friend. And as your friend, I worry about you. I just wish you worried about yourself.”

“Dr. Henderson cleared me to return to work,” I stated.

“Funny. If that was the case, why didn’t you return to the bureau?” It was my turn not to answer. He added, “Exactly.”

“Brian, that is different. He never said Icouldn’twork.” I never told Brian the extent of the damage done from the bullet, but Logan had to be honest with the bureau and they really were the ones who said my only option was a desk job. I believe they were thrilled when I turned that down. “If you thought I wasn’t up for the job, then why did you recommend me?”

It was time for him to be put on the spot.

“Honestly?”
