“Yes, please,” I said.

“Damien called me and asked if I knew anyone. Your name was the first I thought of. But I never thought you’d accept the job. I mean, Kinsley, you’re on the other side of the world and it was just a little more than a year ago that we didn’t know if you would live or die.”

At least he didn’t say he didn’t think I was qualified, but it really sucked to hear he never wanted me here. The support I thought I had, I really didn’t. Diana didn’t want me to take it either. Was it a mistake taking the job? From what I’d learned from Draven and Reesa so far, it sounded like I was needed here more than anyone knew.

I’m going to show you all that this is where I belong.

“Well, I guess you didn’t know me as well as you thought. I’m here and I’m excited to be working to bring families together again,” I replied honestly.

“Good. At least I know you are doing something that you enjoy.”

“And I’m safe?” I added.

“Safer than you are here on our streets. Kinsley, I never should’ve allowed you to come in the field with me,” he said softly.

“Brian, what happened wasnotyour fault. I was on the case and asked you to take me. I wanted to be there when the suspect was located. If I had stayed in the car as you instructed, then maybe you’d have been able to take him alive.”And I wouldn’t have gotten shot.

“There are a lot of ‘ifs’ but none of that changes the fact you were injured because of me.”

“You can’t blame yourself. There is one person responsible for what happened and he’s dead,” I said firmly.”

It took some counseling for me to learn to accept that instead of blaming myself, but it was true.

“Guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one.”

I couldn’t change his mind. It was something he was going to need to work out for himself, just like I did.

There was a knock on my door, and I looked at my watch. It was six in the morning. “Brian, I have to go. Someone is at my door.”

“I’ll wait while you check to see who it is,” he offered.

I chuckled. “And what are you going to do from the US?” He huffed. “Brian, the resort is very secure. There is nothing to worry about. I promise I’m safe. Now I must go. Talk to you later,” I said and ended the call.

I’d learned my lesson from the first time, and before answering the door, I grabbed the robe from the bathroom. When I answered the door, it was Draven. He was dressed in a pair of shorts and a T-shirt.

“Hi. Did we have a meeting that I’m not aware of?” I asked.

“No. I was out for a jog on the beach and saw your lights on. Then I noticed you were on the balcony. I waved, but you didn’t see me.”

And why were you looking up at my room?

“I was on the phone.”

“Is everything okay?” he asked.

“Yes. It’s just the best time of day to speak to my friends back home. I’m sure you understand that.” For some reason, my first thought was if he had a girlfriend back home who he called and missed.None of my business. Don’t ask.“How was your run?” I asked, changing the subject.

“Good. Would you mind if I came in? I don’t want to wake any guests that might be trying to sleep."

Or you could just go back to your room.

I opened my door wider and he entered. “Sorry, my room is a mess. I haven’t had a chance to put away everything I purchased yesterday with Reesa.” I looked around and was embarrassed that my bed wasn’t made and the only place for him to sit was at the small dining table or on the balcony. It was bad enough that he was in my room, I didn’t want anyone else to know about it. “Want to sit?”

He nodded and walked over and took a seat. No way was I going to sit on the bed, so I joined him at the table. It felt…awkward.

“Do you jog?” he asked.

“I used to each morning. Not anymore.” I hated small talk. “I’d offer you something to drink, but I haven’t called down for breakfast yet.”
