Why couldn’t we have met under different circumstances?

CHAPTER10

I’d much rather be sitting across from Kinsley, but instead of her sweet face this morning, it was Shaun sharing a pot of coffee with me. Very unexpected. He’d never stopped in on me before. If this was Bennett who had knocked on my door, I’d already know why he was there. Not the case with Shaun. There was something on his mind, but he wasn’t sharing.

I wasn’t in the mood for the small talk, although I enjoyed hearing about his kids, I had things I needed to get done, like call Reesa.

“I’m sure you didn’t come here to talk to me about your family. What is it I can do for you?” I asked.

“It’s not what you can do for me.”

“Then for who?” I asked.

“Kinsley,” he replied.

He had my full attention. “Is she okay? Did something happen that I don’t know about?”

“I’m here to make sure nothing does happen,” he stated.

“Shaun, I appreciate your concern, but I’m very capable of protecting Kinsley. Even though she has also made it clear that she doesn’t need it.”She’s getting it anyway.

He nodded. “I don’t doubt that, but this is about a different type of threat. One that I’m not sure you’re aware of.”

If she could be in danger, I needed to know everything. “Quit dancing around, Shaun. Tell me what the fuck you’re talking about. Who is out to hurt her?” I demanded.

“You if you’re not careful,” he snapped back.

“Me? I wouldn’t hurt her,” I replied angrily to his accusation.

“You might without realizing it,” he stated.

Was he talking about our dinner last night? Wouldn’t surprise me if someone told him and now, he was jumping to conclusions that I was sleeping with her. Not that it hadn’t crossed my mind, and I might have had a wet dream about her, but I knew she wasn’t the kind of woman who’d sleep with her boss.

“You’re overreacting. It was just fucking dinner and a walk on the beach. Didn’t touch her. Not that it’s any of your business,” I snarled.

Shaun cocked a brow and said, “Didn’t know anything about that. And you’re right, thatwould be none of my business. But I’m talking about something else.”

Now I feel dumb. Should’ve known better than to assume anything, especially with a Henderson. But if this wasn’t about me potentially becoming intimate with Kinsley, then what the hell was it?

“Are you planning on telling me or is this a guessing game?” I asked, totally frustrated.

“It’s about Kinsley.”

“You’ve said that already. But what you are yet to share is why do you think I’m going to hurt her?” I questioned.

“I heard you brought her out to meet with a woman, Lita,” Shaun said.

“I did. And I also took extra precautions and asked TJ to drive us. But I’m sure you’re aware of that as well,” I said sarcastically.

He nodded. “That was not the issue. It’s her speaking to the families. I know you brought her to assist you, but I don’t think you realize the position you’re putting her in. She is going to learn things that are very…unpleasant.”

“So you think I should shelter her from it? Because I’m telling you right now, if I try to pull that shit, she’d leave.”Probably after she tells me off.“And before you tell me what I should be doing with Kinsley, remember, she doesn’t work for you, she works for me and Damien.”

“And you feel as though you know her well enough to determine what she can and can’t handle?” he asked.

“And you do? Because if I’m correct, the only time you have spoken to her was at dinner the other night, and that was brief,” I reminded him.

“You’re not listening to what I’m saying,” Shaun said.
