“That’s because what you’re saying isn’t making any sense. If you have something specific that you want to bring to my attention, then say it. Otherwise, back off and let us do our job.”

He changed his tone. “I’m not trying to step on your toes. It’s just…sometimes people have things in their past that can affect them, and others do not no even notice it.”

I knew there had to be some reason why she left the FBI. So far no one had shared what that was. Apparently, Shaun had a clue, and she didn’t even work for him.

“We all have a past. If there is something she wants me to know, she’ll tell me.” I wasn’t going to ask Shaun about it. That didn’t mean I wouldn’t try to get it out of Kinsley herself.

“Just…be careful. If for any reason you believe this is too much for her, then let her go. Send her back to the States,” he stated.

When I was first told she was coming, I had every intention of sending her back. The last thing I wanted was someone I needed to watch out for. But she’d proven herself to be an asset, twice. I’d be foolish to fire her over something I knew nothing about.

“Trust me, Shaun. We are on the same page when it comes to keeping Kinsley safe. If for any reason I believe she doesn’t belong here, she’ll be gone.” That was the truth. Just didn’t foresee that happening.

“Good. I wouldn’t want her to have a setback.”

That was a powerful word. It told me somethinghadhappened. That didn’t mean it would again. “She was highly recommended by her former colleague.” Brian asked me to watch out for her, but if he thought she wasn’t capable of doing the job or was at risk, he never would’ve even told her about the job.

“That’s great. But he might not have experienced what she has. A trauma like that sticks with a person,” he stated. “And you’re right, maybe she is fine, and I’m worried for no reason.”

Maybe she’s fine?

Shaun was really good at saying a lot and yet telling me nothing. But he had accomplished something. He had my mind spinning in a million different directions. What the hell had she been through? If she was a victim of an assault, I could see how dealing with the families could be a setback. But how do I ask her that without it being a trigger for her?

What a fucking mess.

“As I see it, you can either tell me what you know, or I’m going to be forced to ask her, and if you’re right, this might open the wound you said I should avoid. So, what’s it going to be?” I challenged him.

I waited a moment, but eventually, he told me. Not what I thought it was going to be either.

“She was shot.”

Obviously, she survived. “Did Bennett tell you this?” I asked, already knowing that Bennett always did a full background check on anyone working in Tabiq. Hell, even guests went under the microscope, and they were only here on vacation.

“No. I remember seeing it on the news.”’

“What did the news say?” I asked, nervous about what he was going to tell me.

“That an FBI agent had been shot in the line of duty. It wouldn’t have caught my attention, but it was only a block away from my office in Boston.”

“And you’re sure it was Kinsley?” I asked.

“Yes. They had released her name and photo saying she was in critical condition. Might not have all the facts correctly, but I heard she’d been in a coma for months. Is that information enough for you to take what I said more seriously?” he asked.

I nodded. This didn’t mean she wasn’t able to do the job she was hired for, but it did mean I needed to be more aware of what situations I put her in.

“Thanks for sharing that with me. I had no idea.” I had another question for him. “How long ago did this happen?”

“Not exactly sure but I think about a year ago?” he replied.

I was already here in Tabiq, so that made sense why I never heard anything about it. Then again, I wasn’t from Boston. Usually, I only followed what happened around New York when I traveled.

One year wasn’t long. I’d never been shot, but I would think the physical healing part took about that long. The mental healing bit though? I couldn’t even think about it. I knew of people who could never get over the mental trauma.

“Does anyone else know about this?” I asked.

He shrugged. “I haven’t told anyone, but that doesn’t mean no one knows.”

I nodded. “If you don’t mind not saying anything, I’d appreciate it. Kinsley obviously doesn’t want anyone to know.”Not even me.“Not sure why, but that is her business.”
