“But I’m about to,” I finished.

She chuckled. “Well….yes.”

“Great. So much for our friendship,” I half-joked.

“Kinsley you are an amazing profiler.”

“Thank you.” Not angry yet. I’m sure there was a but coming shortly.

“But…”I knew it.“You can’t see what is right in front of you. The man who loves you just learned that TJ died. Don’t you think he thought about you? What if you were in the SUV too? With his injuries, he wasn’t able to think clearly. He had one thought only. You. Protect you. He knew if he didn’t do it quickly, then he would be too weak to argue with you. All he could manage in his state was to conjure enough strength to say that you were fired and put the rest on Bennett.”

“How do you know this to be true?” I questioned.

“Still not trusting your own skills? Fine. Finn told me that after you left, he spoke briefly, then slipped back into a coma for another 24 hours. Is that good enough for you?”

“Why didn’t you tell me this before? We speak every day and you’re only mentioning the coma now?” I asked, totally blown away.

“Still, not using your skills. Why wouldn’t I tell you?” she asked.

Because I’d be back on a flight to Tabiq.

“Okay. I get it. You did it to keep me safe. Draven did it to keep me safe. Everyone wants to keep me safe. But you know what? No one can. I worked for the FBI for seven years and I saw many people doing the right thing and still ended up dead.”

“But do you try to keep them safe anyway? Do you do it at all costs?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Then why expect anything less from someone who loves you? Use your skills. Look at Draven the man, not Draven your boss. Tell me, what do you see?” she asked.

I thought about the time we were together. He had a protective side to him, but he never showed it to the extent that I’d felt in his hospital room. That was protection overload. But Reesa was right. I had noticed how he was struggling to focus even before he learned about TJ. Although Finn hadn’t mentioned it, Draven obviously had head trauma too.

But when he fired me, my mind put up a wall, and all I could see was him pushing me away. I wasn’t thinking with my head, I was feeling with my heart, and it was breaking into a million pieces.

It wasn’t just him sending me away, because that was bad enough, but I was afraid for him. Leaving him there after TJ had just been killed, was too much. I was afraid of losing him.

“I take your silence, that you see what I am talking about,” Reesa added.

“I do. I’ve been so…foolish. I let my anger and my fear prevent me from seeing what I should’ve seen all along.”

“Now, there is just one thing you need to decide,” she said.

“What is that?” I asked.

“Are you going to continue to ignore his calls or are you going to let him explain?”

“But I already know why he did it,” I replied.

“You have so much to learn. Draven needs to be able to explain himself. And you need to let him do it.”

Once again, it was me letting go of control. But maybe I didn’t need to control everything.

“I’m not even sure if he will call again. I’ve ignored his calls and his text messages. What makes you think he won’t give up?” I asked.

“Love doesn’t give up. Have you given up on him?” she asked.

“No.” Just needed some space to…cry it out.

“Good, then I guess I will see you when you return to Tabiq,” she stated.
