“What did she do?”

“Handcuffed me to the bed and tortured my age out of me.” There’s silence. “You can laugh,” I grumble, and my car speakers explode with the sound of John’s deep, rumbling amusement. If I didn’t love the sound of his rare laughter, I’d be pissed off.

“So she’s been enlightened,” he says, still releasing the odd chuckle.

“Well, she knows how old I am, if that’s what you mean.”

“And does she know you’ll be a year older on Monday?”

“I don’t do birthdays,” I remind him. I’ll be remaining thirty-seven forevermore. “Where were you, anyway? You were supposed to be collecting Ava and taking her to work.”

“I’m not doing that anymore.”

“Cheers, mate.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m outside a hotel deciding whether to ram-raid Ava’s meeting with Mikael Van Der Haus.”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake. I can’t deal with your chart-topping stupidity.” He hangs up, and I sigh, slipping down into my seat as I look up at the hotel doors and once again think about all the staff Van Der Haus must have to do his work for him.

He wants her. Who wouldn’t?

I growl and close my eyes, locking down my body, ensuring it stays in the seat, my mind’s eye giving me a recap of the Lusso launch. Van Der Haus’s face when he set eyes on Ava.

Jesus.

That was before I was in the equation. Does he know I’m in the equation?

I get out my car and walk to the end of the street, drinking in the fresh air, trying to reason with myself. I’m failing on every level, unable to stop myself wondering what’s going on in their meeting. Is he making a move on her? Exacting his revenge?

“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” I mutter, pulling out my phone and dialing Drew.

“What’s up?”

“I’m about to storm Ava’s meeting with Mikael Van Der Haus.”

“Why?”

“What if Freja has told him about me and Ava? He already knows his wife’s been in my bed.”

“Call Freja and find out.”

“I’ve tried. I’ve burned my bridges there, mate.”

“Why would Van Der Haus care, anyway? He cheated on her left and right.”

“He cares because his wifedoesn’tcare. He never did like me.”Ego. He tolerated me because I was buying the most expensive unit on his project. “EvenbeforeFreja discovered The Manor.”

“And The Lord who owns it.”

“You’re supposed to be helping.”

“Who cares?” Drew sighs. “They’re getting divorced.”

“I think Ava might care,” I say quietly, stopping at a wall and resting against it, exhausted. “If Van Der Haus tells her I fucked his wife after I met Ava.”

He breathes in. “Shit.”
