Raven gestured, acknowledging that their suspect was straight ahead. While Bend kept talking, Raven circled the area that had been assaulted with bullets, making enough noise to wake the dead. Just as he guessed would happen, more shots rang out, splintering trees. Raven was crouched low enough that he felt a sliver of safety. The kid was a bad shot.

Then a revealingclicksounded.

Casp was out of bullets.

Moments later the crashing of branches, scraping of clothing, and grunts echoed through the distance. Raven raced toward the location where Bend had caught Casp and had his hands behind his back, leading him out of his hiding place.

“I didn’t do anything. I swear! I didn’t!” Casp whined.

“Then why did you run?” Bend growled. “Innocent people don’t fire weapons at the law and detonate bombs trying to kill people.”

“I ain’t going to jail, man. I fucking refuse. You might as well kill me here.”

“For damn sure you will be behind bars,” Bend promised. “You have the right to remain silent…”

“Fuck this! I know my rights. You’re not allowed in my place without a warrant. Where the fuck is the warrant, cocksucker?”

Bend calmly led the suspect out of the woods.

When they reached the truck, Bend pressed Casp against the hood and searched him, placing all the items from his pockets aside. The stash included drug paraphernalia and a small baggie of what looked like crack.

“Fuck, man. This ain’t right.”

“You going to say you were holding the drugs for someone?” Bend shook his head.

“What the hell. Is this what this is all about? Drugs?”

“You’re being arrested for the attacks on women and the bomb that almost killed Dean Ryder,” Bend seethed, losing some of his patience.

“I didn’t attack no one!” Casp cried out. “This is a set up.”

“You might want to start telling the truth. We have a lot of evidence inside your camper that says you will be serving a life sentence,” Bend said in a low threatening tone.

“Evidence? You didn’t find shit! You’re lying.” Casp tried getting out of the handcuffs that Bend placed on his wrists.

“There’s only one liar here and he’s going to prison.”

Raven watched the scene unfold from a few feet back, allowing Bend space to do what he needed to do.

“That’s what all you cops do. They lie.”

Bend snorted. “That’s what all criminals say. I’m taking him to the sheriff’s office, Raven.”

“Wait, wait! I’ll talk. I’m telling you, Ryder. I didn’t attack those women. I also didn’t try and kill your brother. I haven’t even been here in months.”

Bend let go of the man’s shirt and pressed him back against the hood. “Yeah, you just magically show up while we’re here. Save it for someone who cares.”

“Shit, man. Listen. I’m here because my boy Jamie Watson asked me to meet him here.”

Raven shoved his fists into his front pockets. He ached to ask the suspect questions, but he didn’t want to step on Bend’s toes.

“Jamie Watson asked you to meet him here? We’re supposed to believe you?” Bend chuckled. “I think this is a waste of time.” He started to move Casp.

“Ask my old lady. She was pissed when I told her I was coming here.”

“Who is she?”

“Shasta,” Casp wailed. “I swear. Call her. You got my cell right there. Her number is saved. I might be caught red handed with drugs but I ain’t going down for trying to kill someone.”
