“The doctor will be in soon. I’ll check the urine test to make sure your daughter isn’t trying to trap this young man like you trapped William.” Mom laughs.

“You need to check those dates. William and I were married for a while before Billie came along. Tell the doctor that your services as a nurse are not needed anymore.” Raider and I look from one woman to the next as they have words. It’s like a daytime soap opera. The nurse leaves in a huff.

“The nerve of that woman. It’s been too long for that woman to still be holding a damn grudge against me. She was your dad’s ex-girlfriend in school. She needs to just get over it. She’s been married three times and has four children. You would have thought she would have grown up by now.” Mom keeps shaking her head and sits down in one of the chairs. Raider is still by my side but he hasn’t said anything. I keep holding his hand.

“I think I’ll try the doctors in the new office next to the hospital. I don’t want to deal with her like this every time,” I say to Mom and Raider.

“What happened to facing your problems?” I try to remain calm, while Raider throws my words back at me.

“I’m facing the problem at hand. I see there’s a problem and I’m solving it by going somewhere else that I will be comfortable. End of problem.” Raider nods his head yes at me.

“How did you learn to do that automatically? You just know when it’s a problem to face head-on or if it’s something to act on to remove it out of your way. I’m trying to do this but it’s difficult for me. I haven’t ever done it before.” Raider has that lost little boy look on his face. How can such a fierce man look so lost?

“By trying. The key to it is compromise between two people and open conversations between those two people,” I explain calmly.

“We can do this.” I give Raider a smile when he says it.

“We’ve done it a few times and we can do it again. Compromise is how a relationship works.” Raider gets closer to me and leans his head on mine.

“We will make this work. You, the baby, and me.” I kiss Raider’s cheek.

“I know we will.” I’m at peace now. My world has turned right side up again.

“Mom is with Rager, trying to work things out. They left me out of the equation again.” I squeeze him tightly to me.

“I love you and I’m not going anywhere,” I tell Raider.

“Neither is the rest of our family. We’re all part of that family including your club. We will all be there for you every step of the way. Sorry for eavesdropping, but I’m right here.” Raider and I both laugh at my mom.

“We love you too, Mom.” I don’t know who is more shocked—me or Mom when Raider says the words.

“I love you too, son, and Billie knows I love her. I have since before she was born.” Raider takes me closer in his arms and he gives me a deep kiss. The door to the room opens.

“I guess there’s no guessing how this baby was made.” The doctor is about my mom’s age. He’s handsome in a clean-cut kind of way and he looks in decent shape. He smiles when he sees my mom. “Fran, it’s nice to see you again. I hear you had a run-in with Hailey again. You two need to settle your differences. Life is short.” Mom gives him her fake smile.

“Cliff, you promised me there would be no issues with Hailey today. I can’t help it if she still hates me from high school. Can we just get this exam over with?”

The doctor looks at me. “Hello, Ms. Nesbit. I’m Doctor Billings. None of the other OBs were available today or any this week.” He looks at the chart that he brought in with him. “The urine and the blood test confirm you are definitely pregnant, congratulations. I’m assuming you’re the dad.” The doctor looks at Raider.

“Yes, I’m the father,” Raider answers.

“Good to see that Ms. Nesbit has a good support group. That is always a good thing during the first pregnancy or any pregnancy. People always say it takes a village to raise a child. Well, it’s the same thought on getting the child born. The woman carrying the child goes through a lot of changes with her body and her hormones, and it takes some adjustments on everyone involved. It can be as stressful for the father-to-be as it is for the mother. I’m going to write down a couple of books that I think would be useful to you both. I also see that you’ve been having bad bouts of nausea. I’ll write a prescription for nausea medicine and for your prenatal vitamins. I also have a pamphlet of dos and don’ts for pregnant women. Please read it carefully. It has two pages that pertain to your nutritional guidelines. If you have a headache, you can take Tylenol sparingly, but only when you must. A warm bath will help with body aches. The pamphlet will also address these issues.” The doctor sounds clinical and I’m not comfortable with the man. I will be changing doctors until I find a doctor, I’m comfortable with. “I also see that your blood pressure is low. That isn’t too alarming but I want to keep an eye on it. Pregnancy makes a woman tired from all the changes the body is going through. You may have bouts of dizziness since you have low blood pressure too. It also means you will feel more tired at times.” The doctor looks at my mom. “I would suggest blood pressure checks twice a day. Fran, I would suggest getting a blood pressure machine and teaching her how to check the pressure herself.”

“I’ll be doing the blood pressure. I know how to take it manually and with a machine.” We all look at Raider as he speaks to the doctor. This man amazes me. Mom taught me how to do blood pressure myself a long time ago. Ryan knows as well.

“We’ll be doing a scan today. We should be able to hear the heartbeat, and I need to get some measurements. The nurse said you’re sure about your dates that you gave her so this shouldn’t take long. We are doing a vaginal scan today. It may be uncomfortable until you adjust to the wand but it won’t hurt you or the baby. You may have a small blood discharge later today but that’s all normal, I promise you. There will be a female technician in here, just so you know. She’ll be bringing the machine in and helping me with the measurements. I’m going to update your file and I will be in after the tech gets here. Here is a gown for you to put on and you can cover up with a blanket until I get back, for your modesty. Fran, I believe you know where to grab a heated blanket or I can get a nurse to get it for you.” At least he’s warning Mom that Nurse Hailey would be sent back in here.

“I’ll grab it,” Mom tells him. The doctor leaves the room. I get up and go to the corner where there’s a curtain I can pull and step behind, so I can change. Mom leaves to get the blanket.

“I can help you,” Raider tells me.

“Alright.” I step out of my slides. I leave my bra on and lose my dress by slipping it over my head. I slip my panties off. Raider helps me so I don’t lose my balance. He picks up my dress and folds it and then puts my panties on top of it.

“I missed you last night. I got drunk at the clubhouse and slept it off in my office. Gator woke me up this morning or I would have missed all of this. I will try to never leave again.” I look at Raider and I see that he is sorry.

“I don’t want promises you can’t keep,” I say to him with sincerity.

“I’ll keep this one. The only thing I kept hearing in my dreams was one day you would be gone and I can’t live with that. I just want us to be alright. I want to try some more of this compromise thing.” He kisses me softly.
