The bassfrom the music is heavy, even out here. I had to park the car halfway down the street because I knew I wouldn’t be able to get any closer. People are laughing on the lawn, where the party has spilled outside. I fold my arms, tucking my hands into my armpits as I glare at everyone that tries to speak to me.

“Where’s Lux?” I ask a girl I've seen around campus; I’ve seen her talking to Lux on occasions.

“She was on the dance floor the last time I saw her.”

I nod, then make my way through the front door, the music assaulting my ears. Fucking hell, I thought it was loud outside. How the hell are they listening to this shit, this loud? Aren’t their ears bleeding? It wouldn't be as bad but the DJ’s taste in music isn’t my thing, it sounds like we’re at a rave. I have to squeeze through people to get deeper into the house, where I look for Lux and laugh as I see the party is the same as all the others. Everyone is coupled up or in groups, grinding on each other. I’m pretty sure a few of the couples are fucking in open view of everyone. I stretch up onto my tiptoes, trying to get a view over people’s heads, but I’m a short ass and it doesn’t work out well for me. I push through and see flaming red hair bouncing around in the thick of the dance floor.

“Hey,” I shout behind her, trying to draw her attention. The guy she’s dancing with notices me and spins her around to face me.

“You came!” she squeals, pulling me into a bear hug.

“You seemed like you were going to keep pushing if I said no,” I laugh, “So I thought I’d save myself a fight.”

“Shots!” she screeches, gripping hold of my hand and dragging me through the mass of bodies. We stumble into the kitchen, and it’s lucky I have a firm grip on her because she stumbles forward and almost face plants on the floor. She starts laughing hysterically and I shake my head, moving deeper into the kitchen. The island is lined with booze, and I grimace seeing all the spilt liquor on the floor. You can hear people’s shoes trying to un-stick themselves from the floor.

“Drink,” Lux shouts, trying to pass me a shot with a shaky hand.

“No, I’m good,” I say holding my hands up, “What did you want to bring me here for?” She starts tugging at her bottom lip with her teeth, the happy vibe she had a second ago is lost. She looks around sheepishly, avoiding eye contact with me. “Lux?”

“Well…” She rubs her hands together. “You remember you thought something was happening and you weren’t sure?”

“Yeah,” I move closer, placing my hands on her shoulders to keep her eyes on me.

“Do a walkabout.” I quirk a brow, my head pulling back a little. Tears pool in the edges of her eyes, and the sight of them has me wanting to pull her into a hug. She’s telling me to do something, but even with the tears in her eyes, it’s like she’s pleading with me not to do it.

“I need some air,” I say with a smile, and the tension leaving her is visible as her shoulders sag. She smiles at me, then whips around, grabbing a drink from the island and I’m forgotten.

I back away, finding the guy she was dancing with staring at her like a puppy. “Hey, keep her company for me?” I say with a smile, nudging him in her direction.

“You think she likes me?” he asks, unsure of himself. I haven’t seen him around the campus, I wonder if he goes to a different school?Either way, I don’t get a bad vibe from him, and he seems sweet enough.

“Oh yeah, she likes you,” I say, wiggling my brows at him. He barks out a laugh and I chuckle, watching as he bounds off to her.

I slink backwards, my eyes still on them, when I bump into someone. I turn around to find a girl I don’t know throwing daggers at me. For some reason, it sets me on edge, and even though I should be apologizing for bumping into her, I can’t find it in me to do so. Her sour face just pisses me off. Instead, I growl, stepping into her personal space, and her eyes widen as she takes a step back. “Do I look like I want to be dealing with shit from a Monster High bitch?!”

“Wow, take your psycho pills, freak,” a guy growls from behind her.

“How about I shove my fist down your throat?” I’m being brave, all the anger inside me from the last few days bubbling inside me, and my face still fucking hurts from the beating my father gave me. I don’t like this feeling. Yeah, I’m a first-class bitch most of the time, but the build-up of negative emotions I have seems to be rushing to the surface.

“You little cunt,” he growls, stepping closer, and I meet the cunt head on. My face alone should tell him I’m not afraid to take a beating. Only, with this guy, I can at least fight back.

“Back off, dude, or you and me are gonna have problems.” I grind my teeth as Brantley steps in front of me, shoving the guy back with enough force he stumbles into someone.

“Great, where’s your dog if you’re here?” I snap, glaring daggers into the back of Brantley’s head. He turns to face me, a huge shit eating grin on his face.

“He’s at home being crate trained,” he says with a smirk. I can’t help the smirk that tips my lips as the image flashes through my mind. “Now, you gonna tell me what’s got the bitch switch flipped?”

“Eat shit,” I murmur. Coming here was a bad idea for so many reasons, Lux is already wasted and clearly doesn’t need me here. I go to push past him, when a firm grip stops me in my tracks.

“Sam, you need someone to talk to, this isn’t like you,” he says with a sincere voice. What really grinds my nerves is the look of pity on his face.

“Don’t look at me like that, Brant, you’ve got nothing to pity me for,” I rumble, folding my arms. “Now leave me the fuck alone for once and stop trying to get me to talk, like you’re my therapist.”

He’s saying something I can’t make out—or I’m just plain ignoring— as I storm off without letting him finish. I do hear him call after me, but I don’t stop. I don’t want his bullshit apologies, or for him to say he cares, because I know it’s a load of shit. Yeah, we get stoned together, but that’s about it. Would I turn to him like I would Lux? Nope.

I push my way through the crowd, the need to get away my driving force. A couple of them growl at me for not apologizing, but it falls on deaf ears as I get to the stairs. I take the steps two at a time, breathing a sigh of relief as I notice the music isn’t as loud up here and there are less people.

“Sup, Sam,” Dean says with a smirk. “Didn’t think you’d be up for it tonight.”
