Someone tried toshoot me.How is this my life?
Marius ushers me to his car and drives to the hospital.
I’m the first to break the silence. “I don’t know how that happened.”
He hesitates. “She was sick, sweetness. Sick and obsessed with you. So if she couldn’t have you, no one else could.” A dry chuckle. “Not that I can blame her on the first account. But I’d like to think I wouldn’t resort to weapons. What’s wrong with a plain old kidnapping?”
I snort.
“So she was the one who blackmailed you?” I frown.
I wouldn’t have thought Jenny had much tech knowledge. Didn’t he say only a good hacker could have escaped their tracing for so long?
“Her husband, actually,” Marius tells me. “I—”
He marks a long pause, so I look up at him.
“I killed him. Blew up his car.” He glances at me.
I’m not quite certain how to express what I want to say to him, but he keeps going before I find my words. “My initial plan was for her to be in it, too. Although I wasn’t certain which one of them was guilty at the time. I did hear them argue earlier, and figured it was a team effort.” He smiles a little. “See? I’m a little sick too.”
All of a sudden, the words come easy. “That’s fine. I still love you.”
He looks straight at me, although he’s still driving. I see complete and utter shock in the depths of those blue eyes.
I laugh. “What? It’s not like you didn’t know that.”
“Yeah, sure, but I thought you wouldn’t admit it until our golden anniversary.”
“Turns out, all it took was a public shooting.”
“If I’d known sooner, I would have just hired someone to do that,” he replies, making me laugh.
Although as always, I don’t know whether he’s serious.
After all, he’s Marius Goltz.
Marius parks in front of the hospital in the short-term lot, and pulls me right onto his lap.
“You know you’re thoroughly screwed. There’s no escaping me,” he whispers, nibbling my ear as his hard length digs through the fabric of our clothing.
Good thing I don’t want to.
Not now. Not ever.
