About an hour later, I got dressed and we were ready to leave. Etta gave me a quick review and then sent me home with a few potions to drink over the next week. Izdor’s magic had healed a lot, but the pain remained, so the sore and stiff muscles needed a little boost. Mostly vitamins would do the trick. Etta alerted me to call if I experienced any issues. Sadie swore she’d do everything she could to take care of me.

On the way home, she held my waist and kept my arm around her shoulder. It was as much to be close to me as it was to help me. We paused near the flower tower as she called it and stared at the sunflowers. Sunlight winked through the petals. I smiled while tilting my head back, enjoying the warmth on my face.

“I flashed you here.”

That caught my attention. I chuckled while glancing at her. “Are you saying you’re going to do it again?”

“No,” she said to my dismay. “But I am saying it really…” She tapped her lower lip while carefully choosing her next words. “It really made me feel alive.”

“That’s all I want for you, Sadie.”

She grinned. “To flash you?”

“No, I want you to feel good. I want you to feel free.”

She took my hand and turned me back to the path that would lead to the house. Neither of us were in a hurry. The tonics were tucked into a bag over her shoulder along with our things. She stayed quiet till we got to the front door.

After she unlocked it, she guided me inside. She forced me to sit on the couch downstairs even when I argued that I could make it upstairs without any issues.

She rubbed my cheeks. “Let me take care of you this time, okay?”

I melted into the cushions. This woman was utterly divine. She had to be from another realm with how careful she was with me. Before the accident, I would have never guessed. Surely something dangerous wasn’t necessary to bring it out of her, was it?

She kissed my forehead. “I swear, if I hadn’t left you, this wouldn’t have happened.”

“Don’t talk like that.”

“But it’s true, Andres. I was being selfish, and I picked a fight with you to sabotage the relationship. I’m…” She frowned while procuring her phone. While staring at the screen, she said, “Bella says I’m codependent.”

“Oof.”

She blanched. “What?”

“I mean, it’s not a terrible thing. It just means you need help figuring out good boundaries.”

“Is that why you came to my rescue?”

I scratched my scalp. I needed a shower so badly. “Well, that’s one of my flaws, I think. I have a tendency to swoop in and start carrying everything without asking.”

“I see we have a lot in common.”

“Good thing we’re getting married.”

So much red caked her face that I thought she would turn into a balloon. In five seconds flat, she raced across the room to the kitchen and started rummaging around for something. She returned with a glass of water and bread.

I smiled as she set it down. “I can get things.”

“I told you I want to take care of you.”

“Alright, alright.”

She lifted the bag and dug out one of the potions that was a pain-relieving salve. After rubbing some onto her fingers, she started massaging my shoulders. I felt like butter in a hot pan. It was nice to get some attention, especially since this was something I usually did for others.

I leaned into her touch, cringing at some of the nerve pain. “I never thought I’d meet someone like you.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Because I’ve done this before.”
