The frustrated groan from Isaiah both caught me off-guard and made me grateful there wasn’t a whole lot of light in here. If he noticed what was going on below my belt, I might be explaining to Jack tomorrow why I’d popped a few stitches.

Isaiah fidgeted in the seat, gazing out the windshield. “Well, I mean, I guess that gives us time to make sure we’re not rushing into anything.” He laughed almost soundlessly. “Make sure we really want this.”

Before I could respond, he faced me again, and…

Good God. There was no need to make sure I really wanted this, and from the undeniable heat in his eyes, he was onboard too.

His Adam’s apple bobbed, and when he shifted again, I tried not to think about what he might be trying to accommodate.

Voice a ragged whisper, he said, “I should probably go. Because the longer we sit here…”

“Yeah.” I nodded. “Good idea. You’ll, um… You’ll be at the next game, right?”

“I will.” He grinned. “With a sign and everything.”

I chuckled, both relieved and disappointed we were bringing this to a close before I lost my damn mind. “I’m looking forward to it.”

“Me too.” He reached for the door handle but paused. Facing me again, he chewed his lip for a second. Then he leaned across the console, and he hugged me.

I closed my eyes as all the air rushed out of me. Wrapping my arms around him, I inhaled deeply, catching his scent for the first time. Goose bumps sprang up all over me. Oh my God, this was real.Hewas real, and so was this chemistry between us. Holy shit.

Once again I wished we’d done this on a night when my lip wasn’t sewn together. Was a kiss really too much to ask? Seriously?

But I’d regret it if I pushed it. And when I finally did kiss him, I didn’t want either of us to hold back.

We’d taken four years to get here. We could wait a little longer for that part.

“I’m really glad we did this,” he murmured.

“Me too.”

He loosened his embrace, but paused for a soft kiss on my cheek. When our eyes met again, he grinned. “Good night, Nick.”

I smiled as best I could. “Good night, Ian.”

And then he was gone, taking all the air in the car with him.

I waited until he’d opened his truck before I left, and as I drove away, I was dazed.

Thathadbeen real, right? I hadn’t hallucinated everything between spotting him by the fountain and letting him out of my car?

From the tingle on my cheek where his lips and his five o’clock shadow had brushed…

No. I hadn’t imagined it.

Isaiah was real. The connection between us was real.

And I had never wanted anyone more in my life.

Chapter 7

Isaiah

“I just wishwe’d waited a little longer so this”—Tanner had indicated his injured lip—“had time to heal.”

“What do you mean?”I’d asked.

And damn if he hadn’t looked me in the eyes and said,“I mean Ireallywant to kiss you right now.”
