"Good morning," I greet with a smile and a lamp in my hand.

"Uh. Hello?"

His startled face doesn't change, even as the lamp swings into his head, and then he crumples to the floor, his towel parting so nothing is left to the imagination. I can’t leave him like that.

"Now what?"

"Check his bedroom door is locked and get out the way you went in."

I head over to a wardrobe in search of something to cover this man better once I put him in the recovery position. But the inside of his wardrobe contains far more exciting things than clothing.

"Ooh. Toys. I have good idea I tell you." But I need to get safely out before spilling my genius plan to Caeo.

Chapter forty

Porter

WhenCarter'smendragme into the living room, I am not expecting to see Knox sitting there, drinking brandy with my dad. Not that the bastard deserves the title of dad.

"Knox," I cry out, this could be my only chance to talk to him. "I think this is all Annie's doing. Mum said she was up to something, but I forgot after Gravel was shot. I didn’t for one minute think it was her."

"I know," Knox nods calmly.

He knows?

"Sit down, Porter," Carter instructs. The two goons holding my arms release me and melt away. Knox and Carter wait expectantly on the sofas for me to join them. My eyes glance from one man to the other, fixing finally on Knox. I have a feeling I'm about to be side-lined in my own abduction. This isn’t about me meeting my long lost father and working things out. This is about two powerful mob bosses having a diplomatic meeting under the guise of brandy.

"So, you found me, and a lot quicker than finding Nico." I sit beside Knox, holding back my urge to grab him and never let go. I’m hoping throwing Nico's name into the chat will remind them that it was him who suffered, rather than me. "Who knew my dad was rich and all this."

"Well, I certainly didn't before today," Knox insists.

"Almost makes me wish I'd been curious, but I never once thought about finding him," I confess. I may think this is all about Annie, but I still need to convince these two men. I'm worried Knox is going to give up something, whatever men like this barter with. Favours, good will, lives.

"Alright, I believe you," Carter groans. "But I want her brought to me, and you can be my guests until she arrives."

"Have you phoned your dad? He could get people looking for her." I keep my focus on Knox, my allegiance made very clear.

"I don't have my phone," Knox confesses. "I came here in such a hurry after I found the scrap of paper you had with his name on."

"Oh." That can't be true. Walking in here with no way out is a reckless thing to do. My man knows better than that.

I want to ask him, but with Carter watching, he wouldn't give me a clue. Fortunately, Carter's phone rings and his attention turns away from us.

"Hello, Gregory. This better be important."

"Is that name? Man would not tell. You raise him is good. He not talk," Nico's familiar voice calls. "I is on speaker phone, yes?"

"Who is this? What do you want?" Carter shoots a nervous glance my way, or probably just Knox's way, since he's the scary one with a plan, but I'm the one who gives a sassy smile back. Anything Nico does, I'm taking credit for. I was the one to befriend him, after all.

"I is calling Mr Slayer. You put on speaker phone?"

"Fine." Carter pressed the speaker button and turns back to us. "Is this one of yours?"

"Nico, is everything OK?" Knox calls out.

"I have target scoped out as asking. Man in front room with phone. The white hair man in icky sand suit. You want me take shot?"

"No," I scream at the phone.
