“Lilliana,” a deep voice called from the other side of the door. “What’s taking so long? We’ve discussed these little temper tantrums. No more. Come out.Now.”

The Half-Blood’s face paled. She shot a panicked glance to Nero and pressed her finger to her mouth with a silentShh!

“I told you. My name is Lilliane,” she called out.

“I won’t argue with you anymore,Lilliana. Get down here, or I’ll drag you down by the hair.”

Lilliane rolled her eyes like it was no big deal. Like this guy … whoever he was … threatened to drag her by the hair all the time.

It wasn’t a good look.

And now that he’d heard this, there was no way Nero could leave his mate’s sister in this situation. It was clearly dangerous. Toxic. Abusive, even.

He waved her forward. “Come with me,” he whispered softly. “We can protect you.”

She shook her head. “No. You can’t.” Louder, she said to the man behind the door, “I am not ready. Fuck, can’t a girl have a bit of peace and quiet to get ready for her wedding?”

“Now!” the voice boomed. “You’ll have plenty of time to get ready. Out, Lilliana.”

The wordweddingrattled around in Nero’s head. If Valentine heard that he had let her sister marry the jerk with all the threats, she would never forgive him.

He wouldn’t forgive himself either.

Lilliane was his mate’s sister, and that made her family, no matter how you sliced it. He couldn’t exactly throw her over his shoulder and drag her out. That was too close to the uttered threat coming from beyond the door, but Nero also had the feeling Lilliane wouldn’t come quietly.

Whatever her reasons for staying away, he knew it was bad.

Valentine’s instincts, her fear for her sister, her insistence that something was wrong, all of it had been right. And now, Nero feared they were too late.

“Nero! What are you doing up there?” a familiar voice called out from below him.

He didn’t even have the time to chide Valentine for leaving the safety of his truck. The bedroom door burst open.

There stood the vampire Nikolas, pissed as hell and rearing for a fight.

SEVENTEEN

VALENTINE

This is dumb. I am probably the dumbest person on the planet right now.

Of course, thinking those words didn’t mean Valentine would stop what she was doing. Nero was beyond that wall. He could be in danger … and ifhewas in danger, Valentine wouldn’t know how to cope.

She couldn’t be responsible for Nero getting injured. Or worse.

Nero Greenlee was a good man, as she’d come to discover during their time together. He was a sweet man who agreed to accompany her for no reason.

He was also one hell of a good kisser.

And his butt.

Valentine couldn’t help the thrill that clutched her heart when she thought of Nero naked. In all her life, she had never …never, ever, EVER… been attracted to a man like she was attracted to Nero.

She’d never considered having sex, either.

Enter Nero Greenlee with his kisses and cute butt and his genuinely kind soul. Not to mention the way he liked to reach out and touch her when she needed it most.

And here he was, putting his life on the line.
