He took the phone. “Carson,” Lucas said.

“Hey, Lucas. How’s Adam? I’m so sorry you both had to find out over a text.”

Lucas cleared his throat. He didn’t want to tell Adam’s business or about the panic attack.

“Listen.” Carson lowered his voice. “I know you’re close to both Nash and Adam and with Nash being injured, your protective instincts are probably going haywire, but we need you to keep an eye on Adam was well.”

“I’ve got him,” Lucas promised.

“Daddy, let me talk to Lucas, please.” Sam’s voice echoed in the background.

“Hold on, Lucas, let me put you on speakerphone.”

“Sure.” He glanced back at Adam and his baby hadn’t moved.

Adam sat with Nash’s hands sandwiched between him as he stared at Nash.

“Lucas.” Sam’s sweet voice came over the line.

“Hey, Sam.”

“Adam is going to pretend that he’s fine, but he doesn’t always handle shocks well. Daddy is going to take care of Green for fucking telling Adam like that…”

“Language, babydoll,” Carson warned in the background.

“Right,” Sam responded. “It’s not really Green’s fault. He was panicking and he hasn’t slept, and he truly did forget to call Adam or send someone to pick him up.”

“I understand,” Lucas said. “And Adam will be fine. We had a rough moment earlier, but I handled it.”

Sam sighed. “He had a panic attack, didn’t he?”

“Yes.” If Sam knew and asked, Lucas saw no reason to lie.

“He gets really tired after…so…”

“He’ll be fine with me. We will either be here or wherever Nash is. I’ve got this handled.”

“Thanks, Lucas,” Sam told him. “Tell Adam I love him, and we’ll be home soon. As soon as we can.”

“Your trip—” Lucas started.

“I have a cop and a suspect in the hospital. The trip is being cut short, but Sam understands. I need to be there to straighten everything out,” Carson explained.

“Caden and Lincoln are coming too. Lincoln wants to check on Nash and Caden hates Vegas. It’s too peopley and he was done after the first day,” Sam added.

“It’ll be good to have all of you back,” Lucas responded.

“If you’ll stay with Nash, I would like to send Green and Rodriguez back to the station to get me a few things then home to sleep.”

“We’re not going anywhere,” Lucas confirmed. With as tight a grip that Adam had on Nash, Lucas didn’t think even the doctor could pry his baby away.

“Thanks. I’ll call later to check on him,” Carson said. “Give me back to Green please.”

Lucas returned the phone before going over to the bed. Adam had scooted his chair as close to the side as he could get. Lucas moved his right next to Adam’s. Wrapping his arm around Adam’s shoulder, Lucas breathed a sigh of relief when Adam leaned into him.

“Sam and Caden are on the way home,” Lucas told him.

Rodriguez waved his hand as he directed Green out through the door as Green continued to talk on the phone, leaving Lucas alone with two boys.
