“I didn’t think anything of it the first day. It felt off, but I just thought I was so exhausted I was imagining things. The next day I felt it and the only time I didn’t was when I was in my apartment with all my windows and blinds closed,” Storm said.

“And you didn’t go to the authorities because?” Hedda asked.

“I didn’t trust them,” she whispered.

She didn’t know how Hedda was going to react to that. Storm just didn’t want the police to be in the bad guys’ pockets and for it to be even worse because she had gone to them.

No, thank you.

“We’re going to figure this out,” Hedda said.

Storm stopped moving, not expecting that response from her. She thought Hedda would have asked more questions, not that they were going to figure it out.

“Shit,” she whispered.

“What’s wrong?” Storm asked, alarmed.

“I’m getting a call and I need to take it. It’s important,” she said. “I’m sorry. I’ll see you in a couple of minutes?”

“Yeah, no worries.”

Hedda cut the call and Storm took in several shaky breaths. She didn’t like that she wasn’t on the phone with her anymore. What if something happened? She didn’t have anyone else to call in this situation.

Her parents were out of the question because they were back in Georgia. Not close enough to do anything.

Miles was out of the question because… well, he didn’t want anything to do with her. Why was she going to call him if he didn’t want anything to do with her? He did say before that she could text or call him for anything, but she didn’t think it applied anymore.

He never said it didn’t, she just felt like it was an unspoken thing.

Sighing, she went and grabbed a couple more shirts and underwear before walking back to her bed. She needed to get everything together quickly so she could get out of here and to Hedda.

She didn’t want to stay here another minute without having someone on the phone or being in their presence. She needed to feel safe and right now she didn’t.

Storm grabbed Mika, her stuffed elephant, and placed it on top of her bag. All she needed to do was go to the bathroom and be on her way.

An eerie feeling filled the room and the pit in her stomach grew and sunk.

Something wasn’t right.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Storm tensed up and looked at her bedroom door. Who was knocking at the door? She wasn’t expecting anyone, and no one knew where she lived besides Miles. He wouldn’t be here, right? He didn’t have a reason at all.

“We know you’re in there! Open the fucking door, bitch,” a male yelled.

Her whole body went rigid as the person yelled. Who was that? Why were they here? Were these the people who had been messaging her or stalking her?

The pounding on the door intensified and she knew it wasn’t going to take a lot for them to break down the door.

Storm grabbed her phone and ran toward the bathroom. She shakily unlocked her phone and called Miles.

“Please pick up,” she whispered as it rang.

The banging intensified and she knew she didn’t have long before they got in. Storm didn’t have any other way of getting out of her apartment. Jumping out the window wasn’t an option unless she wanted to die.

She lived fourteen floors up. No way out besides her front door and down the stairs. Those people were outside her door and she knew they would out muscle her.

The phone call went to voicemail and tears sprang to her eyes. Why wasn’t he picking up?
