“I’m going to make up for it. No matter how long it takes me, I'm going to make it up to you,” he said.

She was stunned as he let go of her chin and buckled her up quick. Storm wasn’t expecting him to say he was going to make it up to her. She was expecting him to say it was in the past and now she was with him and nothing could happen.

If he kept talking like this and actually started trying to make it up, she was a goner.

There was no way she was going to be able to fight off her feelings if he did that.

CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

STORM

Her whole body ached as they pulled into the driveway of his house. She had closed her eyes during the drive, trying to stop herself from whimpering and crying out with each jolt of pain through her body.

No doubt the medicine was wearing off.

She had no clue since she couldn’t remember when she’d received her last dose of medicine. She’d had the IV in and knew it had been dripping medicine in, so it shouldn’t be wearing off yet. Maybe it was from all the bumps and turns they took to get to his house.

She didn’t realize how much the car ride was going to affect her. It was like she could feel every little bump and turn they made. Even him stopping the car hurt her stomach. She knew he tried to be gentle each time he stopped or started, but every tiny movement hurt.

“We’re here,” he said. “You can open your eyes now.”

She opened her eyes and let out a gasp. His house was amazing. It was a two-story building, painted dark blue, with a couple white trimmed windows in the front.

Breathtaking.

“What do you think?” he asked.

She just continued to look at the house. What was she supposed to say? She didn’t expect him to have a house like this.

“I didn’t expect this,” she whispered, not looking away.

Storm didn’t want to offend him, but also didn’t know what else to say. She didn’t really want to talk to him but knew she wouldn’t be able to ignore him forever.

Maybe short answers were best. It didn’t leave any indication she wanted to talk more but she would be responding to him, even if she didn’t want to. Well, she didn’t have to respond to everything. Just the important things.

“Stay right there. I’ll come around and pick you up,” he said.

She didn’t really hear what he said but continued to stare at the house. There was a tiny flower bed in front of the house filled with dead flowers. She knew it was winter so they were going to be dead, but she couldn’t imagine what they would look like in the summer when they bloomed.

Exhaustion weighed on her body as she relaxed in the truck seat. Holding her body still as they drove took a lot out of her. She didn’t think it would be this much, but as Miles walked away from the truck and she sat admiring his house, she realized just how tired she was.

She watched him walk to the front of his house and do something. What, she had no clue, but she assumed it was to unlock the door. Storm wasn’t allowed to walk on her own which left her able to do practically nothing.

Especially when Miles was around.

He was like a mother hen, waiting for her to do something, telling her no, then doing it for her.

Miles walked back toward the truck and gave her a soft smile. He opened the door and helped her unbuckle her seatbelt. She had completely forgotten she had it on and should’ve taken it off before he came around. He didn’t need to be doing that for her.

“I could’ve done that,” she whispered, briefly looking at him.

She could feel her eyelids start to droop the longer she sat comfortably on the seat. She didn’t think truck seats would be so comfortable, but it felt like her body was molded into the soft cushion.

“But I wanted to do it for you,” he said. “Let me take care of you right now.”

“I’m a big girl,” she softly said as Miles picked her up.

She loved how careful he was when picking her up both times, like he really didn’t want to hurt her. But she shouldn't love it. She was trying to find things she didn’t love about him because he had put her in danger. He hadn’t done anything about it until she was already kidnapped.
