“That was a long time ago.”

“Yes, it was, but it broke me, and I decided it was best just to date and not go through that again, but I also know it’s inevitable to get hurt in life.”

“Rhett, there are things you don’t know about me—”

“I don’t care.”

“You would. Trust me on that. You would, eventually, break my heart.”

Rhett wasn’t sure what to say, so he walked to where his hat and coat hung, put them on, and walked to the door with her following him. At the door, he opened it and looked back at her.

“Everyone deserves someone who can make them forget they ever had a broken heart.” He pulled the door closed behind him.

Lucinda stared at the door. Sure, he thought that, but he didn’t know about her. He had told her he wanted kids. Of course, he did. Most men do. There had to be a man somewhere who would love her and be willing to adopt. It was finding him. What if it was Rhett?

People didn’t realize how hard it was for her to bring it up, but it was a necessary evil. She knew it was his loss if she told a man she couldn’t have children and he left. She’d tell Rhett if they decided to see each other. If he was attracted to her, then he deserved to know about her first.

Adoption was her only option, and she wanted it very much. She wanted a baby so badly.

A while later, she lay on the sofa, watching a movie, and jerked when Tigger barked. Then she heard someone knock on the front door.

“Who in the world is out in this?” She walked to the door and saw Rhett on the porch, so she quickly opened the door. “What are you doing back?”

“It’s snowing too much. I can barely see where I’m going. Can I stick around until it lets up?”

“Of course. Come in before you freeze.”

Rhett walked in, and she could feel the cold coming off him.

“It’s getting dark, and I didn’t want to chance riding Nacho that far in this weather.”

“There’s a small stable in back if you want to put him in there.”

“I would. I’ll do that now. Once I take off my coat, I won’t want to go back out.”

“I’m sure.” Lucinda walked to the desk to get him a flashlight when the lights went out. She handed him the light.

“Thanks. I won’t be too long. I appreciate this, Cin.”

She watched him walk out the door, then walked upstairs to get him a blanket and pillow because he was probably spending the night.

“Wonderful,” she muttered. Picking up her flashlight, she trudged up the stairs.

Rhett entered the living room and closed the pocket doors to keep it warm. The flames from the fireplace lit up the room. Cin came in and handed him the blankets and pillow. Rhett looked around.

“I guess I get the floor, huh?”

Cin laughed. “You think I’m giving up the couch for you?”

“Didn’t say that. It looks wide enough for two.” He grinned.

“In your dreams,” she told him.

“Every night, darlin’, every night.”
