“I’ll go with you.”

“Wonderful!”

“Where is your biological father?”

“He lives in New York with his wife and three sons.”

“Do you see him?”

“We email almost every day and exchange photos. I haven’t seen him in a year.”

“You need to visit him, Cin. Life is short.”

“I know. I’ll make plans after the New Year.”

“Great. Now, let’s go get our trees.”

When they stepped onto the porch, Lucinda wanted to go back inside. It wasn’t just cold, it was frigid. It was a good thing the wind wasn’t blowing or she’d cancel this trip and do it another day. She hurried down the steps and got into the truck. She saw Rhett shake his head as he walked down the steps and got into the truck.

“I told you it was cold.”

“This is not cold. This is ridiculous.” She clenched her teeth to keep them from chattering.

“Where did you find that aluminum tree in your lobby?”

“In the attic.”

“So, it’s a real one. I mean, it’s not one of those nostalgic ones.”

“It’s real. My great-grandmother had it forever. I remember it from when I was a little girl.”

“I like it.”

He started the truck and drove them to Richards Christmas tree farm and pulled into the driveway.

“Maybe since it’s so cold, it won’t be—” Lucinda stopped as she stared out the windshield.

“Won’t be?”

“I was going to say crowded but obviously some people are crazy enough to be out in this.”

Rhett cleared his throat. “Uh, we’re out in this.”

Lucinda glanced at him then back at the parked vehicles.

“Yep. Crazy.”

“Let’s get to it, darlin’.” He pulled his gloves on and she did the same.

She met Rhett at the front of the truck. He took her hand and they walked to the tent where some cut trees were.

Lucinda let go of his hand, and walked along the row of trees but didn’t see one she liked. She knew she was going to end up going up to the trees to find one. Did she have to go on the coldest day of the year? It had to be colder up there. She shivered.

“We can do this another day,” Rhett said.

“We’re here. I’m going to see if someone can take us to the trees.”

“Wonderful,” he muttered, making her laugh.
