“Yes, but—”

“Please. It’s just something I saw and thought you’d like.”

“Okay.” She stared at the box, ripped the paper off, and stared at the box, then she lifted the lid and gasped. “It’s beautiful.”

Rhett watched her run her fingertip over the oval-shaped emerald necklace.

“I’m glad you like it.”

“It’s my birthstone. How did you know when my birthday was?”

“Erin.”

Cin smiled. “I see. She never mentioned it.”

“She was sworn to secrecy. Let’s put it on.”

“Please.” She handed him the box, turned her back, and lifted her hair.

Rhett put the necklace around her neck, kissed her nape, and sat back. She turned to face him, and it looked beautiful on her.

“I love it. Thank you.” She leaned forward, pressed her lips to his, and then got to her feet. “I’m going to help in the kitchen.”

Rhett watched her leave the room, then he watched TV. A few minutes later, he got to his feet to get something to drink. His dad and Nate told him to bring them something too.

“Damn, how many hands do you think I have?” Rhett stared at them.

“I’ll go, too. I need to see what Penelope’s up to,” Nate said.

When the men walked into the kitchen, the women stopped laughing. Nate and Rhett looked at each other, then back at the women. Beatrice moved first.

“Just in time. Can one of you carry the turkey to the table?”

“I’ll get it, Mom.” Rhett picked up the big plate holding a giant turkey.

Rhett glanced around the room, and when his eyes landed on Cin, their eyes met and held.

“Enough of that. We’re hungry.” Penelope pushed past them with a bowl of mashed potatoes.

Rhett grinned when Cin blushed. Then they walked to the dining room, and he set the platter on the table, then headed back to the kitchen to get the drinks.

Rhett was still in the kitchen when Cin entered. She smiled at him. He stepped toward her, cupped her face, and kissed her. Her arms wrapped around his waist.

“I needed that,” he said when he raised his lips from hers. “Cin—”

“Everyone, please sit, and we’ll dig in,” Nathanial said from the dining room.

Rhett took her hand in his and led her to the room. They moved around the table and took their seats. His mouth was watering from the smells, and he didn’t know he was so hungry.

The conversation flowed around the table with a lot of laughter. Nate was teasing Penelope, as usual, and she was trying her best to look angry, but he’d make her laugh. Rhett was happy for them. His brother was happy, and he was so glad about that. Rhett wanted that in his life. He looked at Cin to see her staring at him. With her.He wanted it with her.

Lucinda was having the best time, and she loved Rhett’s family. They didn’t treat her as a stranger. They made her feel welcome and a part of them.

Two hours later, everyone was sitting in the living room, moaning about all the food they’d eaten. Rhett and Lucinda sat in the recliner together.

“Hey, about we take the ATVs out before it gets dark, Rhett?” Nate asked him.
